MARBLE SLAB WITH MASK RELIEFS, C1 CE. PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME This magnificent relief was found in the woods of the sanctuary of Diana at Nemi in the area of the theatre, in 1931. It shows a majestic bearded mask carved in an archaising style in high relief, possibly a Dionysus. He wears a crown decorated with palmettes and is shown in 3/4 view facing left, toward a tripod with a basin in low relief in the background. Though his lips are parted like a mask's should be, his eyes are not hollowed out, creating a slight ambiguity in the viewer, as if the mask were partially alive. The back of the slab has a very low relief also showing a mask, this one a comic male mask with an open mouth, the head of the chorus or hegemòn theràphon, against the cloth of a theatre tent. This kind of relief would stand on its own pedestal in a Roman garden. Surviving lore concerning the rex Nemorensis indicates that this priest or king held a very uneasy position. Lord Macaulay's quatrain on the institution of the rex Nemorensis states: Those trees in whose dim shadow The ghastly priest doth reign The priest who slew the slayer, And shall himself be slain. This is, in a nutshell, the surviving legend of the rex Nemorensis: the priesthood of Diana at Nemi was held by a person who obtained that honour by slaying the prior incumbent in a trial by combat, and who could remain at the post only so long as he successfully defended his position against all challengers. However, a successful candidate had first to test his mettle by plucking a golden bough from one of the trees in the sacred grove.
