This close-up photograph shows two beautiful pink water lilies, also known as Nymphaea, floating side by side on still, dark water. The flowers dominate the frame, their petals unfolding in narrow, pointed layers of soft pink that grow smaller toward the golden heart at the center. Each bloom bursts with a fluffy cluster of bright yellow stamens, where tiny insects — possibly bees or flies — gather to pollinate. Around them, large flat lily pads spread outward, their deep green surfaces contrasting with the blossoms’ luminous pink. The dark water beneath, almost black, makes the colors glow even more vividly. A small watermark, ©UDKo, is visible at the lower left. Scientifically, these blooms belong to the genus Nymphaea in the family Nymphaeaceae. Like all water lilies, they root in the soil at the pond’s bottom, while their leaves and flowers float serenely on the surface. The broad leaves, commonly called lily pads, absorb sunlight while stabilizing the flowers. The golden stamens are the male reproductive organs that produce pollen.
