What does safety look like when your home isn’t safe?
For many women and children experiencing domestic abuse, it looks like Sonas - Ireland’s largest provider of refuge and frontline support.
This week, Ombudsman for Children, Dr. Niall Muldoon, visited a Sonas refuge to listen, learn, and bear witness.
He toured the refuge and the on-site apartments.
Met the team supporting women and children every day.
Heard about the real-life challenges and service gaps.
Spoke directly with some of the families who’ve found sanctuary here.
Domestic abuse is an under-reported crime.
In Ireland, 1 in 3 women have experienced psychological abuse by a partner.
15% have endured physical or sexual violence.
While anyone can experience domestic abuse, the overwhelming majority of victims are women and children - and the majority of perpetrators are men.
Domestic abuse is rooted in power, control, and a denial of rights.
That’s why listening to those affected is essential.
And why services like Sonas must be seen - and supported.
Dr. Niall Muldoon visited Sonas Domestic Violence Charity to meet the team, tour the refuge and hear directly from women & children affected by domestic abuse.
