Between Karma and Monsters Daily writing prompt Are you superstitious? View all responses This is a great question, and it was the most intriguing for me out of all the Daily Writing Prompts for the week. For someone like me, who writes literary horror and often uses monsters as objects of karma or divine justice in certain situations, I think about superstition often. I write in superstition a lot as well, in my settings and plot devices.

I talk about karma, monsters, and using superstitions as plot devices in my response to this daily writing prompt. Hit the link below for the whole post:

The Greenland Diaries: Day 17 They came to my house last night. I was downstairs, behind my wall of boxes, when the Drum started. There was an immediate smashing of the door. It was followed by a sprinkling of glass on my wooden floor. I could feel my soul trying to leave my body. I didn't want to be alive. They didn’t waste any time. They knew exactly where to look.

More days from my popular apocalyptic horror series the Greenland Diaries. New day posted every Monday. Great series. Tons of monsters. All unique and disturbing, as they should be.

The Greenland Diaries: Day 16 It happened sometime in the early morning, close to when the Drum normally stops. There was a long burst of gunfire near my house. I couldn’t tell what direction it came from, but it couldn’t have been very far. There were no screams between the metallic snaps, just the endless drumming. The gun must’ve been something automatic with a big magazine.

Day 16 of the Greenland Diaries. Posting this is my new Saturday tradition. Easy series to get into, even if you think you need to catch up. Monsters. Diaries. Guy surviving. Standard stuff, except the monsters are incredible.

The Greenland Diaries: Day 15 My house hadn’t been bothered while I was gone. The doors were still locked and the windows still intact. Some homes that had been fine when I left were now pulverized. That type of destruction didn’t match the method of the monsters. Could it be something new? Luckily, my house is covered by the tipped maple tree, so it looks destroyed.

Day 15 of the Greenland Diaries. If you need an original and amazing monster as a plot device, start reading my series. It will not disappoint.

The Greenland Diaries: Day 14 Last night, I slept beneath the stairs inside my parent’s house. It was dusty and cramped, but I was able to build a wall out of boxes. They follow me wherever I go. I didn’t want to keep using the same spot more than twice. This area is too thick with them. There were more screams. How can people think of moving to places they’ve never been?

Day 14 of my Greenland Diaries. Apocalyptic horror, monsters, found journal, and much more. Read it. If you're always wondering what the monster is, and have to know, well, you've come to the right place.

Momentum I wish it hadn’t been youmy beautiful sonsto wake me up. It should have beenthe self-carved skindangling red off my wrist,or the catfish water hiding the sirenbelow the High Bridge. Crafting that suicidal lullaby so perfectlyI could picture the river bottom andit was Camelot, Shangri-La, a muddy paradise ofnon-living so blissful…

I've long said that becoming a father woke me up from this trance like trauma state that was my mind. However, that doesn't mean I wanted it be this experience that snapped me into the present. It has put too much pressure on my sons.

The Greenland Diaries: Day 13 I haven’t been able to write for a day. I got caught on the road while trying to take a detour to my parents. I just got back. On my way back from Ling’s apartment, a line of twenty military vehicles came down 694 going west. There was a bulldozer in front of them, plowing aside each abandoned vehicle. All the cars were covered in ivy.

The Greenland Diaries is alive and going. Enjoy this next day in the series. So many monsters. They're the main character of the series. Enjoy them.

The Greenland Diaries: Day 11 There’s more noise in this neighborhood. I didn’t sleep well last night. Gunfire, explosions, and an orchestra of screams went on continuously throughout the night. Sitting in absolute darkness with the world on fire isn’t easy. Sometime in the early morning, a woman came screaming up to the crawl space. She said she saw me go in there earlier and to let her in.

Day 11 in my apocalyptic horror series the Greenland Diaries. Monsters. Drums. Shadows in the mirrors. A cheerful and enlightening way to start your week. Thanks for reading.

My Threads Hold onto that mushroom forest of fairy lightwhere the dragonflies are silk and wireand the bells of Foxglove giggle in the breezelike children playing on a pastel playground. Hold onto that toxic highwaywith straws of cement and steel crinkledand lined with nuclear dandruff, raced by survivorsdodging mutants with curtain tentacles. Hold onto that crypt with the skull-door…

It is hard to hold onto your dreams when caught up in the monotony of life and its mundane challenges. I write about this a lot in my poetry. It helps me cope. Enjoy!

The Greenland Diaries: Day 10 The Drum sounded till early morning. Nothing was near my house. Nothing shook the dust free from my ceiling. Nothing scratched the roof. The moment the Drum stopped I was outside. It took me three hours to bike to my parent’s house. The freeway was clogged with broken and smashed cars. Most of them were covered with this weird ivy and blue flowers.

Day 10 from my book series the Greenland Diaries. Found journal. Horror. Apocalyptic. Monsters. Suspense. Mystery. What the hell is happening? Enjoy.

Monday Musings 5/19/26 As you might have noticed, I keep going back and forth on the title of my blog from Patrick W. Marsh to What the Basement Said. Recently, this has been because I've been going back and forth on what I'm going to call my self-published collection of poetry next year. I thought I could keep calling my blog What the Basement Said, but I think it is a perfect title for my poetry book, which is my next self-publish release, unless something changes of course.

This weeks little update is poetry collections, old projects that bully me, a poem about my struggles, and other musings. Enjoy, and thank you for reading my work.

Be Stubborn Daily writing prompt Share a story about someone who had a positive impact on your life. View all responses I've been a part of many conventions and events over the years. Some have been fantastic. Others have been hot garbage. I've given my all at some events, and I've been incredibly lazy at others. I have been an utter mixed bag of motivation throughout this whole self-publishing, blogging, and writing career I've staggered through.

I wrote a blog post about some great advice I got from a random guest of honor at a convention a million years ago.

My Golden Claw The red mountain withan amber icicle appendage hanging.A skeleton muddy with bells of shadeit’s bones; petals off a broken and weeping flower. This detonation of a monsterdragging through an alleyway,is carving the pavement and anthills inbelly buttons and cherries of daggered earth. The talons sprouted and mummifiedwith my bullying, abuse, a sarcophagus of trauma…

In this poem I talk about how happy I am that I've turned my various struggles into monsters. They had to go somewhere, and this seems like the healthiest place for them. Based on the Unnamed from my Greenland Diaries.

Random Update 5/5/25 Hope everyone is a version of happy and healthy this fine Monday morning. I don't want to come off as too happy and drive everyone away. I know excessive exuberance on a Monday morning is like a Pokémon repellant. I've had coworkers turn into monsters on Monday mornings. Anyways, thank you everyone who continues to read my work and buy my books.

Update on my writing life. Books, blogs, stories, poems, and future projects. Thank you to everyone who continues to support me and read my work. Honestly, I'm a broken record, but I truly appreciate it.

Dialogue with a Monster Daily writing prompt What gives you direction in life? View all responses This is difficult. I think some of the basic answers to this daily writing prompt would be family, god, money, etc. Lots of peanut butter and jelly responses. Nothing wrong with that. My mind went there originally too when I started this post. However, direction is an interesting term.

This blog post is all about how I use exploring my own trauma as direction in my life. How turning my monsters into prose and poetry gives me a sense of purpose.

“I’ve Seen Things” Daily writing prompt Do you have a quote you live your life by or think of often? View all responses I know my inclusion of this quote is hardly original when answering this daily writing prompt courtesy of WordPress, but regardless it is one of my favorites. Most people are aware of Rutger Hauer's stunning monologue from the film Bladerunner, but I thought I would talk about it here because I'm not much of a quote guy, even as a writer who is thoroughly obsessed with language and words.

I'll take any excuse to write about my favorite quote of all time; Hauer's legendary monologue from Bladerunner.

The Never Night Owl Daily writing prompt When do you feel most productive? View all responses I cannot tell you how bummed I was when I finally accepted that I was not a night owl. I really thought most artists, writers, and creative types were servants of midnight. Ghouls that only came to life when everyone else was asleep, the night was full and raven-black, and the office was dimly gleaming like a desk lamp oasis.

When are people most productive? In my blog I wrote about being an early bird creative type, and lamenting that I'm not a late night crazy writer. Why couldn't I fulfill that stereotype?

Pain Daily writing prompt What makes you nervous? View all responses Oof, well, I've become relatively addicted to answering these Daily Word Prompts. I really enjoy them, and appreciate WordPress injecting them into their platform. They sort of get me out of my rut of constantly writing about monsters, depression, and fiction. They engage my brain in different ways, and that testing, that PAIN is beneficial long term.

For this WordPress writing prompt, I wrote about how pain makes me nervous. I don't avoid it, but wow does it really nail me. Haha. Enjoy!

SpongeBob, Walks, & Mario Party Daily writing prompt How do you unwind after a demanding day? View all responses Every single day feels demanding, especially right now. However, I do find some solace in various pieces of media and habits. Some of them have endured, and some are specific to right now and my interests. Life is strange when it comes to media. You occasionally find something you like and love, and it sticks with you for decades (my love for Final Fantasy, poetry, Bladerunner, and X-Men), and other times you evolve and change.

The daily writing prompt courtesy of WordPress: how do you unwind after a demanding day? Well, the title says it all. Not everything. Some of it. Mostly. But some.
