I visited Colombia for a few weeks just after Christmas and flew out from Bogota to the island of Providencia for my second visit. I first ventured there whilst travelling in 2010, this time I was accompanied by my wonderful friend Maya who worked as a Doctor there for two years and showed me a whole diffeeent side to this paradise island.
Originally entitled Providence by an English Puritan colony established in 1629 by the Providence Island Company, and was taken by Spain in 1641. Forts and cannons dating back hundreds of years can be found scattered all over the adjacent Santa Catalina Island which guarded the approaches to the islands only natural harbour.
The privateer pirate Captain Henry Morgan used Providencia as a base for raiding Panama, and rumors suggest that much of his treasure remains hidden on the island. Many parts of the island are named after Morgan.
