The writer welcomes recent comments by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer indicating 'Britain of the Brexit Years' is no more. The country needs to rebuild its European Union links and further those with NATO, says the writer.

The writer takes issue numbes quoted by a previous correspondent and indicates support for rejoining the European Union is growng - thanks in part to 2016 Leave voters who have changed their minds and young, pro-Europeans who did not have a vote in 2016.

Hull Daily Mail ✉️ shows a shift: many Leave voters would choose differently now, and #proEU young joining electorate also boosting #RejoinEU support.

Meanwhile, #Brexit advocates still mislead on #EuropeanUnion costs — while accusing #RejoinEU voices of “downright lies.”

This letter appeared in the Yorkshire Evening Post on 16 September 2025. EU Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds is only 45 - but told a newspaper he cannot foresee the UK rejoining the European Union in his lifetime. Peter Packham, Chair of Leeds for Europe, takes issue with this - suggesting it should happen much sooner than that because opinions regarding Brexit are shifting in light of the damage it has cause. Plus younger voters joining the electoral roll tend to be more pro-European already.
