#Rewatched The Cat (1992) - been decades, this was a revelation restored and on the big screen. Nobody makes em like Lam Nai Choi. Dog fu vs cat fu, oozing Lovecraftian horror, Lizard Venom on fire, sweaty armpits presented for sex appeal, cats leaving cat shaped imprints in glass like a cartoon.

#Rewatched The Thing (1982) - First movie on the big screen of the new year so had to make it a banger. Scratchy beautiful old 35mm print - a pleasure. You can really hear the snow scrunch in the theater.
Also, Bennings, why you gotta be such a whiny bitch all the time, I’m glad you got et.

#Rewatched LotR: The Two Towers (2002) - I ask, who was wrong, Theoden or Gandalf? Gandalf pushes hard for Theoden to stay in Edoras and fight instead of going to Helm’s Deep, which he says will be a death trap. And he’s totally right (but for the happy intervention of trees/Eomer/elves etc). BUT …

#Rewatched LotR: Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - perfect for a day when walking the dog felt like climbing Caradhras, so much snow. Shockingly my control freak sister-in-law let my little niece and nephew join, they spent most of the movie being like “oh no, are they going to die!?” They dug it.

Yeah the Farrelly Bros couldn't work a camera then (or now frankly), but Dumb and Dumber remains one of the funniest films ever made.
Carrey getting his nose everywhere so slightly stuck on a car window is Chaplin level clownery.
Just a masterpiece of goofball cinema.

Wake Up Dead Man remains my favourite Blanc mystery. I worried it was festival hype that got me, but no.
The chewiest thematically, the best central performance, the prettiest, it's got it all.
Josh O'Connor is the real deal, he's come a long way from Dickhead no. 3 in Riot Club.

There’s a ton of white powder in this Christmas movie but it ain’t snow. Instead we get a drug-dealing Predator/Terminator knockoff fighting Dolph with deadly flying CDs and a Scorpion-style drug injector and it is AWESOME.

#Rewatched Crank: High Voltage (2009) - I realized it’s been like 5 years since I last saw this masterpiece! Quite possibly the most gratuitous movie ever made, in every possible way. The movie where a dude uses Statham’s open chest cavity as an ashtray.
What more can I say but “Fuck you Chelios!!”

#Rewatched Uninvited (1988) (GK Death Cruise Movie #3) - This movie is so terrible - I love it. The mind boggles at how a giant monster cat can fit inside a fluffy little cat - cat must be the TARDIS inside. Exhibit A on why janky CGI is lame, but janky practical effects are a delight.

#Rewatched Shin Godzilla (2016) - 4K restoration - I quite like Minus One but it’s a bit of a nostalgia fest with a pat anti-war message and jingoistic undertones. The OG Godzilla and Shin POINT FINGERS. Shin is such a scathing indictment of the incompetent and bureaucratic Japanese government. /1

#Rewatched Wheels on Meals (1984) - Subway Cinema’s Sundays on Fire, on 35mm - Watching a dumb kung fu comedy by yourself and watching with an appreciative crowd are such different experiences. You’re not just waiting for the silly Richard Ng bits and pratfalls to end, you’re actually enjoying them.

#Rewatched Universal Soldier (1992) - dares to ask the question: “What if Sgt Barnes and Chris were turned into cyborg super soldiers immediately after the climax of Platoon?”
Lower budget than I recalled, and the Terminator DNA is just oozing out, but fun. Ally Walker giving big Meg Ryan vibes.
