Tiny ocean migrants play a massive role in #SouthernOcean #carbonStorage
A groundbreaking study has revealed that small but mighty #zooplankton—including #copepods, #krill, and #salps—are key players in the Southern #Ocean’s ability to absorb and store #carbon […]
Salps, while not at all uncommon, are one of the most fascinating planktonic organisms seen while I shoot for my Aliens Collection.

While not uncommon in any way, sometimes these #oxycephalus #amphipods pose soooo well that it’s impossible to not photograph it! It’s riding a colony of #salp clones

#Salps have a solitary and colonial phase in their lives, and the colonies of different species come in a variety of shapes. A new study led by @planktomancer.bsky.social uses videos of salps to examine the swimming of different colony shapes.

A literal #unicorn among #salps! Solitary-stage Brooksia rostrata bear a unique frontal projection (like a "rostrum") which they can wiggle around using muscle contractions. They are often seen trailing their budding aggregate-stage colony for a long time #multijetpropulsion (Feb 2022)
Carmine particles help us visualize the pharyngeal mucous web that #salps, like this Pegea confoederata, use to filter feed on microscopic algae and bacteria from the water. When the net is full, they swallow and digest it whole, and proceed to build a new one. (Feb 2022)
We use laser sheets in lab tanks to scan and image the #salps we collect while diving, like this Pegea confoederata. This technique also allows us to track the flow of water in-and-out of the animal using the laser-illuminated particles in the water #multijetpropulsion (Feb 2022)
During our night dives in the open ocean we inject fluorescein dye in front of #salps, like this Brooksia rostrata colony, to visualize the jet wakes as they swim. From these videos we can measure the angles and speeds of jets along the colony #multijetpropulsion (Feb 2022)
Cyclosalpa quadriluminis #salps have modified the transversal double-chain we saw with Pegea by pinching the developing chain at regular intervals, releasing radial-looking, bilateral whorls where all the zooids are attached to the center by peduncles. #multijetpropulsion (Feb 2022)
Pegea confoederata #salps in their aggregate stage form transversal double chains where the zooids swim perpendicular to the elongation axis of the colony. This is how colonies in all salps are budded, but other species develop into different configurations. (Feb 2022)
A pea-sized #Argonaut #octopus hitches a ride on a chain of cloned #salps, as they drift through the open #ocean together.

I didn't & most ecologists I know don't even know #SALPS make human life possible by processing more CO2 than the #Amazon & deep sea mining conducted by capitalists who understand 0 about #salps may finish us all off with total ignorance soon. STOP DEEP SEA MINING AS POLITICAL PRIORITY #1. WE MUST.
