Maine search-and-rescue crews have a new resource: a horse named Kodak Kodak is believed to be the first horse in the country to become air scent detection certified and assist with search-and-rescue missions.

Kodak became an official member of the Mounted Air Scent Team after passing the air #scentdetection certifications through the Maine Association for Search and Rescue. This certification means Kodak is able to help find missing people in wooded terrain by scent just like a dog. #horses #equine

#DYK a cheetah’s keen sense of smell isn’t for hunting—it’s for #communication. They mark territory by urinating on trees, rocks, or termite mounds, using their #scentdetection skills to pick up signals from other #cheetahs.

Naturally, rats use their sense of smell for survival. They have poor vision, but sensitive noses. At #APOPO, rats use their natural scavenger behavior to find landmines. Our #HeroRATs are capable of smelling explosives in minute picogram quantities. #powerfulnose #scentdetection

This HeroRAT is on soil floor training, the final step before the training minefield. Guided by trainers, it searches for the smell of TNT in a 3x7m soil area. A ‘CLICK’ for digging up a target tea egg earns a tasty reward. #HeroRATs #APOPO #Training #ScentDetection #clicker
