Why the Global Elite Gave Up on Spelling and Grammar From Epstein’s associates to Jack Dorsey to David Ellison, the rich and powerful share a seeming disregard for proper English.

“Disregarding #spelling and #grammar in a #writtenconversation can be a #powermove or a sign of #friendliness, or perhaps both at the same time, said Deborah Tannen, a #linguistics professor at Georgetown University.” www.wsj.com/lifestyle/je...

I've always preferred to spell "traveling" as "travelling", and "kidnaping" as "kidnapping". Possibly because I grew up reading a lot of books by English authors.

On the other hand, "aluminium" is RIDICULOUS!

📘 Cawley et al. argue there are significant gaps & inconsistencies in the national curriculum guidance on the teaching of #spelling, which in turn leads to a lack of teacher confidence in spelling tuition and non-optimal teaching strategies.

A woman and a man are standing in a cemetery. The man is looking at a tombstone and saying "That's cold." The tombstone reads, "Here lies Mitchell Smith, who 'hated' unnecessary quotation marks, speling errors, the Oxford comma."

I love the Oxford comma. My wife hates it. Somehow we make it work

Does someone know anything about the practice of using a comma instead of an apostrophe? I've so far come across two writers doing this: one is late-18th century, and the other (pictured here) unknown but I reckon late-18th to mid-19th century. #spelling #punctuation #manuscripts

Study identifies the most commonly misspelt words among UK schoolchildren A large-scale study of nearly a million pupils in the UK has identified the words most frequently misspelt by schoolchildren. Analyzing 530 million spelling attempts, researchers found that mistakes are not random but follow predictable patterns. The top three most misspelt words were 'sketch', 'mischievous', and 'February'. Other commonly misspelt words included 'couldn't', 'mustn't', 'license', 'definitely', 'indefinite', 'convenience', and 'preferred'. Experts explained that students often spell words phonetically, struggle with silent letters, doubled consonants, and complex suffixes, and sometimes overgeneralize spelling rules. Homophones, such as 'brake' and 'break', also caused confusion. Teachers emphasized the importance of understanding word structure, including roots, prefixes, and suffixes, rather than relying solely on memorization. Regular reading and digital spelling tools were highlighted as effective methods to improve spelling skills and boost confidence in writing. The findings suggest that spelling difficulties are widespread and consistent across regions, demonstrating a national trend rather than isolated incidents.

I'm an indie comix maker so I dont deal w/ editors but "Americans spell it gray" feels proscriptive rather than descriptive, like someone's trying to teach me my own dialect. If there must be a rule I'd prefer the take that gray and grey are different shades or hues.

#Canadian #English uses American "judgment" but British "likeable". You'd think they'd pick one rule and use it for everything.

But I guess it's a judgment call. Or is it a judgement call?

The rule around doubling final consonants when adding a suffix is stressful and more nuanced than I mentioned in a previous video.

You might want to double watch it to get all the details. Or watch it double speed to get through it all.
