Boys’ Roundup: St. Joseph hits the century mark, two-time defending CJ4 champ Montgomery rolls, Ridge upsets Elizabeth, Perth Amboy takes buzzer-beater as state tourney opens at long last It was a two-day wait to start the NJSIAA state high school basketball tournament for public schools in Groups 2 and 4, but for eight schools from the Central Jersey Sports Radio coverage area, it was well worth the wait. CJSR-area squads went 10-10 on the opening day of the three-week tournament, with two non-publics winning games that were originally scheduled for Thursday anyway.

GMC Boys’ Basketball Coaches name 2025-26 All-Division, All-Conference honorees; Colonia’s Rodriguez named Coach of the Year As county championship week gets underway, the 33 boys' basketball coaches in the Greater Middlesex Conference met to pick their All-Division teams, with ten student-athletes ultimately earning All-GMC Honors from eight different schools, an example of how wide open this season has been in the league. GMC Tournament Boys Semis are set with familiar names, as St. Joseph, Piscataway, Colonia, St. Thomas Aquinas advance out of Saturday’s quarterfinals The second GMC Tournament boys' basketball semifinal at Monroe Township High School Wednesday night will feature the league's only two parochial schools, with top-seed St. Joseph-Metuchen taking on fifth-seed St. Thomas Aquinas. That'll follow the opener: a rematch of last year's GMC title game, as second-seed Piscataway takes on third-seed Colonia. Of course, much of the personnel there will be different, as will be the case in the night cap, with two new coaches at he helms of those schools.

Metuchen claims lone upset in GMC Tournament boys’ round of 16, while Wojcik gets 200th win for Sayreville, Vick sets new personal best in East Brunswick win Things went mostly in line with the seeds on Thursday night in the boys' basketball GMC Tournament First Round, as seven higher seeds were victorious and moved on to Saturday's quarterfinals. The only upset was a mild one in terms of numbers, but a big one for the small schools, as 9th-seed and White National Division Champion knocked off 8th-seed Old Bridge on the road, 60-44.

Montgomery holds at No. 1 despite first loss, but there’s much shuffling elsewhere in Bellamy & Son Paving Boys’ Top Ten for Week 4 Only three teams - Montgomery, Somerville and Immaculata - held their ground this week in the latest Bellamy & Son Paving boys' basketball Top Ten, the first of the New Year. Montgomery (8-1) holds at No. 1 after a 2-1 week. In their own Cougar Holiday Classic, they beat Princeton 70-33 on Monday, then North Hunterdon 71-47 on Tuesday. Monty took its first loss of the season Saturday, 53-51, falling to Linden in the Warrior Classic down at Manasquan.

First Saturday of New Year adds some wrinkles in GMC, Somerset County boys’ hoops Saturday was blustery cold in Central Jersey, but boys' high school basketball is clearly heating up. In the Greater Middlesex Conference, there was the first big clash between 2025 GMC Tourney runner-up Piscataway and the new-look St. Joe's, South Plainfield and Sayreville tussled in a critical Red National Division game, and Metuchen put its perfect record on the line. Early January battle of unbeatens – No. 5 St. Joseph at No. 4 Piscataway Saturday – has big implications in GMC Tournament race While the Greater Middlesex Conference doesn't seed its tournament until early February, Saturday's matinee between fourth-ranked Piscataway and fifth-ranked St. Joseph-Metuchen could have a lot to say in deciding the top part of the bracket. The Chiefs and Colonia were last year's finalists. The Patriots lost a ton of talent for various reasons, and while they should improve by the stretch run, they've struggled early.
