Das Bild zeigt das prächtig verzierte Heck der Vasa, eines schwedischen Kriegsschiffs aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, das mit unzähligen geschnitzten Figuren, Wappen und ornamentalen Details überladen ist. Die monumentale Holzschnitzerei erstreckt sich über mehrere Etagen und zeigt, wie viel Wert auf repräsentative Pracht gelegt wurde - ironischerweise sank das Schiff bereits 1628 nach nur 1,3 Kilometern seiner Jungfernfahrt.
