In historical global refugee studies, the voices of migrants and their agency have become of growing interest. As recent research shows, migration is a complex process that is not simply obstructed by states but rather negotiated between different actors. Within these processes, migrants play a vital and active role as so-called ‘agents of experience’. This article analyses how specific migration processes have been negotiated by exploring the agency of German-speaking refugees from the Holocaust in wartime Australia with a particular focus on the negotiation of citizenship legislation. Relying on social cognitive theory, it focuses on actions taken at an institutional level of refugee agency. This allows for the understanding of how refugees have organized themselves and reveals what they did at an institutional level to become a point of reference for the Australian government and to influence its decision to introduce the new legal term of ‘refugee alien’.

Photograph of the Malmesbury War Memorial at the Triangle in Malmesbury. The war memorial is a cross surmounted on a square tapering plinth. The Celtic wheel cross is based on the cross of St Martin on the island of Iona. It has elaborate carved Celtic designs across the cross and shaft. The plinth has moulded relief panels inscribed on the N and S faces 1914 1919 TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD. The E and W faces are inscribed with names of the fallen. The picture is taken from behind the memorial with view back up Abbey Row in the background.
On This Day, 20th March 1921, the Malmesbury War Memorial was unveiled and dedicated at the Triangle, Malmesbury, attended by Lt Col LE Morrice and the Revd Dr Forrest Browne.

A sepia-tinted vintage postcard showing a castle with trees and bushes around it. It has a caption saying 'Warwick castle from the Walls'
Postcard addressed to Miss N Hawkes, c/o Mrs Shreeve, Branstone Road, Burton-on-Trent. It reads: It reads: 'Dear N We have had grand weather all the time. Went round this place yesterday and then a dance in the county hall till 12 last night. We have got the author of the Arcadians with us & Blatchford & Grayson are coming today a grand meeting tonight in the biggest hall in town. Going to Stratford-on-Avon this afternoon with about 1500 more cyclist & motors & brakes etc yours V. W. R.
Among the postcards Vale Rawling's family have is one he sent his future wife April 17, 1911. See ALT tag for transcript. I assume the 'author of the Arcadians' was Alexander Mattock Thompson & 'Blatchford' was socialist writer Robert Blatchford #LabourHistory #Warwick #20thC #WestMidlands
A sepia-tinted photograph of a man in a shirt, tie and suit. He looks at the camera with a slight smile on his lips. A union button in in his lapel.
#OnThisDay Christmas Eve, 84 years ago, Vale Rawlings died. He was buried in Branston on December 28 - which would have been his 53rd birthday. It was 1940 and Vale, a CO in WW1, had lived to see his son and son-in-law face military tribunals for their own CO beliefs. #20thC #History
