This is the least-subtle and most hamfisted screenplay I've ever ever seen make it to any screen. This is clearly a scenario where PTA's reputation lets him just do anything, and then by God, we're all supporting him because this thing is a hit and people love it. So brutally unfunny. Here, Hoffman has to fake a middle eastern (offensive, ignorant) accent, speaking gibberish Arabic words. It's a bunch of foreign-panic stuff (like the gay-panic stuff from earlier). Thank goodness we're mostly past this era.

So the comedic setup here is that Chuck has been mistaken for an 'auctioneer' and some arms dealers put him in charge of translating a bunch of languages he doesn't speak, but...

Does Elaine May think arms dealers sell their weapons at AUCTION? Baffling.
