A study in motion, shapes, lighting, and squash n' stretch in my works. This was also the added bonus to me breaking out some of my multi-leaded pencil packs to test out the various tones offered. You can chalk this up as some of my ramblings or simply me slowly starting off my journey into designing settings and backgrounds.

Bonus: A precursor to my decision to practice on my shape building and loose gripping.

This is, of course, a continuation of my practices using Andrew Loomis's works and guides. This time, I took a picture of my own leg and attempted to study my usage of shading using shadowing and lighting. The bottom was just me giving my own notes and critiques on what could I improve on loosening up my grip on my pencil. The reasoning was to give my work a much more lively animated feel to help me apply the same teachings into my other stylistic works in comics and animation.

My brother was gracious enough to let me draw his foot as a good reference point to improve translating muscle movements. Using the idea of basic shapes in order to display how muscle and bone are used to operate a simple movement or wiggle was a proper way to give life to my work. Overtime, I learned how to work on my light sketching to convey that sort of approach into my future work.

More feet/leg studies for my human anatomy studies down and tried my hand (pun intended) on practicing with bulk, planes, shadows, a smidge on foreshadowing and halftones while I was at it. I'm really proud of the results of my self taught efforts to improve my outlook and study character design, concept art, and building shapes/forms. The books of Andrew Loomis definitely helped me improve my craft by far along with the critiques and pointers from my artistic friends. I especially want to thank my brothers for being my reference models for these practices as well.

An example of how my three-dimensional shape building has improved my shading and shadowing as I used each and every block as a way for me to study the light sources and properly apply the darkness where needed.

Products of my foot anatomy practice sketches from 2022. This was a mix of working on muscle structure and conveying shapes into a single model, like with the hands

Some of my practices using the Loomis Method by the way, for me to break down the anatomy. I will say that this was a very challenging thing for me to work on, especially since I wanted to bounce out of my comfort zone as an artist and improve on my drawing skills a bit further using realism. Having some good photo references of my own grubby mitts and toon gloves as a refresher helped me get a good grasp (pun unintended) of what I wanted to do.

A fun test for me to practice on various gestures as I mapped my way around using the Loomis Method. I definitely wanted to prove Steve Ditko's artistic exercise by using hands to express emotion via nonverbal communication. This is, of course mainly used in various scenes from his Comics such as Doctor Strange and Spider-Man, two characters that often rely on their hands to communicate to the audience and to activate their abilities.

This was the very first time I ever practiced on doing realistic hands like this by photo reference along with studying my surroundings by breaking them down in their basic shapes. It was a great way for me to use this very sane methodology while practicing on one of the most challenging feats for any artist starting out or long-standing. The Loomis Method provided a good way for me to refresh myself and everything I've learned and adding on to extra lessons as a way for me to practice loosening up on my utensil handling.

Some of my hand studies from 2022 I often practiced with using my Andrew Loomis books as a good building basis.
