Illustration of spiders on their backs, legs curled. They've passed away, and it is very sad only!!!
Fun spider fact, because I've got the character space, and I like content incepion....
When a spider dies, its legs curl toward its body because of how its hydraulic system works. Unlike other animals, spiders don’t use muscles to extend their legs—they rely on internal pressure from a body fluid called hemolymph.
While they are alive, they pump this fluid to keep their legs extended, but when they die, that pressure disappears. Then, the flexor muscles pull the legs inward, creating the curled-up posture we all recognize.
"The death curl."
And my real life does very much include children bringing old/dying spiders to me to sit with until they pass. I don't know why or how it happened. But it means a lot to me for some reason.
I am a doula
of death—
shuffled through
a dank landscape
crowded with spirits.
I’m caught in their current,
weaving around
giant,
upturned arachnids—
limbs curled,
gasping their last breath.
There is no pretending
that I am not in mourning
on this world.
