The #StoryGrid Commandments give writers an excellent toolkit for tightening scenes. It may not work for every author, and there are other scene models out there to check out. But I recommend looking at Story Grid – it contains lots of great ideas for writers. #writingadvice #writing #bookcoaching

In this graphic, we see the cover of the book "On Tyranny", the graphic edition by Timothy Snyder and illustrator Nora Krug. Beside the book cover, we see a small illustrated bird pointing its beak towards the text and we read "Readability Review No. 9. Engaging with books, from first glance to final page." We also read: "The Book Case: Books for Readers. www.dinahlaprairie.com" This image promotes a new book review by Dinah Laprairie, book coach and editor, in her newsletter The Book Case.

A new Readability Review is up. This time I review On Tyranny (Graphic Edition).

The interaction of Krug's art + Snyder's text challenged me to think + rethink—and reminded me why I coach writers to write asking "Why now?"

In this graphic, we see a “laptop lawnchair” in the bottom corner, sitting on the grass. The yellows and greens suggest summer, and indeed it is. The text at the top says Lawn Chair Coaching: Summertime writing tips. Credit goes to www.dinahlaprairie.com

In the centre, we read the tip: “A great book starts with one question: What does my reader need to understand first?” Start there, and you message will land where it matters.

This tip was brought to you by Dinah Laprairie, Book Coach and Editor. Get in touch if you want to ask about book coaching.

Reader-centered writing starts with a shift in perspective. What does your ideal reader want as they enter your book, and what do they need at that moment? Begin there.

This summer, I’m sharing a new summertime writing tip each Wednesday. Questions? Reach out!

Are you in revisions? Here are 3 questions to ask yourself about your opening pages:

• Does my first page make readers curious?
• Am I leading with a strong idea or moment?
• Have I given my reader a reason to keep going?
• How do these words affect my reader?
