An American snout butterfly resting atop watercress or duckweed. The butterfly is facing right and is just right of center in the photo. The plants are surrounding it. Its wings are closed. The body and wings are mostly brown, but with some tan at the top of the wing and a tan line just a little below that and another swath closer to the body. A little bit of orange can be seen on the hindwing. The butterfly's mouth is elongated, giving it the name. The antennae stick out a little further than the snout.

An American snout atop common duckweed. The duckweed is an aquatic plant that has small light green leaves. There are usually three or four leaves on each. The butterfly is facing right. Its wings are closed. On the hindwing, it is mostly brown in various hues, with some swaths that are almost white. The forewing is mostly covered by the hindwing, but it also looks to be mostly a dark brown, with tan or near-white at the top, a white stripe in the middle, and a little bit of orange toward the head. The head of this butterfly appears elongated, mostly because of a long snout. The two antennae reach out beyond the length of the snout.

She has a distinctive head, with very large brown eyes and a long snout that looks a little like a bird's beak. Her thorax is silvery grey with longitudinal black stripes, and her abdomen is chestnut brown, with a black border that is distinctive to this species. Her legs are black and brown and her wings, which she folds over her back at rest, are longer than her body.
