NewAthena, the 2nd large #CosmicVision mission, will be the biggest X-ray observatory ever built. It’ll probe the hottest, most energetic parts of the Universe. Adoption expected in 2027, launch in 2037 on Ariane 6.4. Meanwhile, its community of 1130 scientists are shaping its science case.

A large satellite is positioned inside a brightly lit cleanroom. The sides of the satellite’s top part are wrapped in gold foil (thermal blankets); the top is covered with a blue blanket. The bottom part consists of a black boxy structure. The spacecraft is mounted on a wheeled platform; various instruments and scaffolding are visible in the foreground.
In October 2025, engineers fitted the sunshield and solar panels, completing the construction of #ESAPlato.
The mission is on track for the final key tests to confirm that it is fit for launch on an Ariane 6, in December 2026.
