On 03/01/1959, Willa Muir sent Kathleen Raine a telegram that simply said ‘Edwin is dead’.
One of the most profound experiences of my research, coming across this simple telegram in the Muir’s archive held at National Library of Scotland.

I often wonder why Mainstream chose this image of ‘St Monance’ by William Wilson for the cover of this 1979 (reprinted in 1995) edition of Edwin Muir’s Scottish Journey.

Yes, yours, my love, is the right human face. I in my mind had waited for this long, Seeing the false and searching for the true, Then found you as a traveller finds a place Of welcome suddenly amid the wrong Valleys and rocks and twisting roads. But you, What shall I call you? A fountain in a waste, A well of water in a country dry, Or anything that's honest and good, an eye That makes the whole world seem bright. Your open heart, Simple with giving, gives the primal deed, The first good world, the blossom, the blowing seed, The hearth, the steadfast land, the wandering sea. Not beautiful or rare in every part. But like yourself, as they were meant to be.

While hunting for a bridge to connect pieces of writing in my MPHil dissertation, I came across this piece in a Chapman magazine on Edwin Muir, by the late Robert Calder.
Good to see that he agrees with me on the book’s importance.

What else would you be doing on a sunny Scottish afternoon, but double checking your quotes and referencing!!!

Sunset by Edwin Muir from Edwin Muir, Collected Poems published by Faber and Faber.
This edition includes Poems Not Previously Collected. This section was added after Muir’s death, and after he had written the introduction to the collection.

Edwin Muir’s Poor Tom: An Emerging View of Class, Community and Chips!
My first talk on Edwin Muir outside of the PGR community. Thank you to the EICSP for asking me. It is amazing, & slightly nerve wracking, to be asked to be part of such a great panel.

The Killing by Edwin Muir, a poem that is not commonly read. It displays a change in Muir’s writing to a more direct and, for me, more honest style.

On #worldbookday sharing some bits and pieces from the book that has become the pivot of my research on #EdwinMuir in Glasgow
Poor Tom was first published in 1932 by J.M. Dent & Sons and only sold 80 copies. The original cover was designed by William Johnstone.

Edwin Muir wrote several pieces on Robert Burns. Some controversial, others that bear witness to who Burns was to us all. One day when I have enough academic courage & confidence, it will be a topic to return to. An almost conversion @paulinemackay.bsky.social 😉 ??

I always think it is such a shame that this painting Authors in Session by Stanley Cursiter, that includes Edwin Muir, is not in the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. Last I heard it was stored away by Glasgow Museums Resource Centre.

Interesting paragraph in Joseph H. Summers article The Achievement of Edwin Muir… the questions he ends the paragraph with possibly deserve an article of their own …

This was one of the most profound experiences I have had researching Edwin Muir for my MPhil. Coming across these 2 pieces of correspondence made his life very real.
