Andrada begins drilling at Lithium Ridge Chamwe Kaira Andrada Mining Limited has started exploration drilling at its Lithium Ridge project in the Erongo Region.  The company is working with Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile SA through its subsidiary SQM Australia (Pty) Ltd. The drilling forms part of the first stage of a three-stage earn-in agreement with SQM. Under this stage, SQM will fund up to U$7 million in exploration to secure an initial 30% interest. Across all three stages, SQM may fund up to U$40 million. The programme involves 14 000 metres of orientated diamond drilling on priority lithium targets.  It also includes high-resolution geological mapping and sampling, which has already identified new granites with visible mineralisation.  The work builds on historical results showing up to 2.13% lithium along a six-kilometre mineralised ridgeline. Andrada chief executive officer Anthony Viljoen said the commencement of drilling at Lithium Ridge with its tier-1 joint-venture partner, SQM, is a significant step forward in unlocking one of Namibia’s most exciting lithium opportunities.  “The encouraging historical results of up to 2.13% lithium along the 6 km ridge line are already being complemented by a new geological mapping and sampling programme that has identified additional mineralised granites containing visible crystals. This strengthens our confidence in the scale and quality of the project, “ Viljoen said. The Lithium Ridge licence covers about 3,300 hectares and is located 35 kilometres southeast of the Uis mine. Last year, Andrada completed the construction of two facilities at Uis to enable co-production of lithium and tantalum. According to the Chamber of Mines 2024 Annual Report, ore processed at Uis increased by 17% to 951 698 tonnes, driven by higher crusher throughput. The company produced about 50 115 tonnes of saleable tantalum concentrate, with an offtake agreement in place with Afri-Met Resources AG of Switzerland.  Total tin concentrate production in 2024 was 1 523 tonnes. Amupanda demands rerouting of youth fund Allexer Namundjembo Affirmative Repositioning (AR) leader and member of parliament Job Amupanda has called on prime minister Elijah Ngurare to intervene in what he described as the “chaotic and disjointed” rollout of the National Youth Development Fund. In a letter dated 14 August, Amupanda criticised the use of different deadlines and processes across regions for a programme meant to operate uniformly in a unitary state.  In some regions, the application deadline is 18 August, in others 21 August, and in some 25 August.  The Erongo region has not set a deadline, opting instead for consultative meetings. “It cannot be correct that in a unitary state, and for a national programme, youth in some regions are being consulted and getting an opportunity to ask questions while others are on their own, given seven or ten days to submit their project proposals,” Amupanda said. He questioned the requirement for applicants to indicate “youth ownership” percentages despite the programme being limited to those aged 18 to 35.  “The only sensible explanation, as we suspect, is that older politically connected individuals are manoeuvring and positioning themselves for these millions,” he said. Amupanda also criticised the environmental requirements, saying it was unrealistic to expect applicants to secure an Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC) within days.  “One cannot help but decode a well-orchestrated sinister motive to instrumentalise politically connected individuals already seated with the environmental clearance certificates,” he said. He urged the Ngurare to halt the current process and implement a uniform national timeframe.  He proposed September to November 2025 be used for information-sharing in all constituencies, with a final submission deadline at the end of December.  “Intervention is required for a revised application form and criteria that safeguard the programme from diversion and capture,” he said. Regional councils have encouraged youth to submit their applications before their respective deadlines.

Tumas project set to begin mining in 2026 Chamwe Kaira  Deep Yellow Limited is preparing to begin mining at its Tumas Project in the Erongo Region by late 2026.  The company is finalising negotiations with prequalified mining contractors before awarding contracts and starting operations. The update follows progress on early infrastructure works and detailed engineering at Tumas, located within ML237.  In April, Deep Yellow delayed its Final Investment Decision (FID), citing uranium prices that did not offer sufficient value to shareholders or justify new greenfield development. The company now says the rise in uranium prices since then has confirmed the logic behind that decision. Despite the FID delay, Deep Yellow continues to advance the project’s development. This includes work on engineering, procurement, site preparation, operational readiness, and financing. “The decision to defer FID on Tumas was a strategic and value-driven call, and one that has been vindicated by the subsequent strengthening of the uranium market,” said Managing Director and CEO John Borshoff.  “We made the best decision for the company and our shareholders, positioning ourselves to fully capitalise on Tumas in a stronger market. In the meantime, we continue to make solid progress across all key areas of project development.” The company said contracts for key utilities and related infrastructure are at an advanced stage. Early works at the site have largely been completed, and the operational readiness plan is progressing toward pre-production mining, process plant commissioning, and a ramp-up to full production. NamPower and NamWater have issued draft supply offers for power and water. A Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) solar array will supply at least 30% of the project’s power needs. The solar component is expected to reduce both electricity costs and the project’s carbon footprint. Supply contracts with NamPower and NamWater are expected to be finalised within the current quarter. The project will build infrastructure for both utilities and later transfer it to the respective state entities for operation and maintenance.  These contracts are being handled by locally based engineering firms.

Mystery of missing police officer solved Niël Terblanché The Namibian Police in the Erongo Region have confirmed that missing police officer George Hamanja Isaacks has been found in good health.  He was discovered alive and well at a house in Kuisebmond on Wednesday morning. Inspector Judith Shomongula, the regional police spokesperson, said Isaacks was located safely after disappearing in Walvis Bay last Friday. Isaacks had travelled to Walvis Bay for official duties. His colleagues last saw him around 14:00 on Friday. Thereafter, he had no contact with anyone. At the time of his disappearance, Isaacks was wearing khaki trousers, a shirt, a blue jean jacket, and a grey and white cap. People describe him as having a light complexion. His discovery ended speculation that he might have been the person seen entering the Atlantic Ocean in Swakopmund on Saturday.  The search for that individual is still ongoing. Witnesses reported that the man at the beach, who had a light complexion, walked along the shore before jumping into the sea.  He was wearing a red T-shirt, blue trousers, a grey cap, and black sunglasses.  The sunglasses were later found on a bench near the water. Shomongula urged anyone who may have a missing relative or friend matching that description to contact the police. She said Detective Chief Inspector Dino Skrywer can be reached at 081 422 3210 and Detective Warrant Officer Epson Ronnie Gariseb at 081 203 1808. People can also report information at the nearest police station. Shomongula thanked the public for helping to find Isaacks and called for increased awareness along the beaches of Swakopmund to assist in locating the possible drowning victim.

Donatus sets out his vision for inclusive growth in the Erongo region Niël Terblanché Florian Donatus, the newly elected chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council (ERC), has vowed to pursue an agenda of accountability, inclusive growth and accelerated service delivery as he begins his tenure following a recent leadership transition. Speaking at a press conference in Swakopmund on Wednesday, Donatus acknowledged the turbulence of the past few weeks but affirmed that the council is now ready to move forward. “I’m humbled to be elected as the chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council,” he said while also expressing appreciation to his fellow councillors and staff for their confidence and professionalism during the transition. Donatus praised his predecessor, Benitha Imbamba, for her service and pledged to build on the foundations laid by former council leaders. He also called for strengthened collaboration between the council, the Office of the Governor, and other regional structures. “It is through collaboration that we can make a difference,” he said He was referring to the late President Hage Geingob’s emphasis on “institutions, systems and processes” as the formula for service delivery. Regarding education, Donatus expressed concern about learner performance in the region and proposed a regional education turnaround strategy. “We can’t continue to send children to the streets. We should be enrolling them in universities, vocational training, and colleges,” he said. He also indicated that oversight over the Walvis Bay municipality will begin immediately, starting with a review of the Waste Management Department amid concerns about health risks to the community. He outlined three guiding pillars for his leadership: inclusive economic growth, transparency, and accountability. “These are not just buzzwords. They are the values that will guide every decision we make,” he said. He also pledged to operationalise the goals of the National Development Plan 6 (NDP6) through concrete actions. Donatus addressed economic empowerment through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), which he described as a critical tool for supporting small and medium enterprises. “The materials and support our people want must be procured on time and handed over on time… we need to eradicate poverty, and the more we delay, the people suffer,” he said. While speaking about infrastructure, he decried the absence of a dedicated regional headquarters and revealed that his first assignment would be to invite the Minister of Urban and Rural Development to witness the region’s operational constraints. “We are the economic hub of the country. I think it is just fair that the construction of our Regional Headquarters is prioritised in this financial year,” he said. Donatus also called for unity across political and social divides, urging his colleagues to rededicate themselves to the development of the region. “I will lead with purpose, work with urgency and serve with integrity. Together, we will continue to move Erongo forward,” he said. Donatus will be in office until the end of November, when new regional councillors are voted into office after the November Regional Council elections.
