A roadrunner sits on the desert floor and is puffing his/her self up on a cool, but sunny morning. S/he keeps an eye on the viewer. Some close-up details on the feathers which are mostly brown with white speckles. Usually, one see some iridescence on these birds, but this one sits drably against the sand where one could almost miss the bird--perfect color for camouflaging in this desert environment.

What a joy to come across a heron on a little riverside yesterday. The camera I had in hand was my little Sony, quite a small compact but it does have a 24-200 lens on it. I was delighted with this photo when I uploaded it at home. I managed to creep close enough to it to really appreciate the plumage, it looks quite exotic I thought and even more so when it took flight, I wasn’t quite so successful capturing that….. The heron is standing to the right hand side of a little wier, the water tumbles away behind him, whereas in front of him the water is still and provided a lovely reflection of the bird. Beyond is the far riverbank.

Could I ask the many excellent bird photographers here what they consider the idea focal range for, mainly, small bird photography? I’m considering a 200-600.
