Four Spotted Chaser Dragonfly perched on a reed.
Eine große, überwiegend braune Libelle hängt an einem trockenen Pflanzenstängel. Sie hält ihre vier glänzenden, durchsichtigen Flügel ausgebreitet, wie es Großlibellen nicht anders können. Der linke Hinterflügel hat eine Lücke an den Hinterkante. Die Flügelvorderkanten zeigen in der Mitte am Nodus, dem Knoten, dunkle Flecken; auch die Pterostigmen, die Flügelmale, weiter außen sind dunkel. Die Basen beider Flügelpaare sind durchscheinend rotbraun.Beide Hinterflügel haben je einen großen, dunklen Fleck an der Basis
Jetzt im Hochsommer ist er selten geworden, der Vierfleck. Das Foto stammt von Ende Mai. Inzwischen sind andere Arten häufiger an Teichen und Seen zu beobachten.

A Four-spotted Chaser clings to an iris leaf, facing towards the camera. He is a medium-sized dragonfly with a hairy pale brown body and a grey-black tail. His eyes are dark brown and his face is white. His wings are clear, with dark bases, and each of them has a black spot half way along the leading edge, as well as a black pterostigma. In the case of this individual, who belongs to the subgroup called 'praenubila', the black pigmentation has spread as a dark cloud into the surrounding wing membrane. It's thought that this happens when the dragonfly larva has developed in unusually warm water.

A young Four-spotted Chaser hangs on a rush, against a well-diffused background of dry vegetation. She is a medium-sized dragonfly with chocolate brown eyes, a pale face, and a bright brown thorax. Her abdomen is bright brown at the base and black at the apex, with yellow spots at the sides of each abdominal segment. Her wings are mainly clear, but the fore edges are yellow, shading to deep orange at the bases, and there's a small black area at the base of each hind wing. As well as the normal wing spot towards the apex, each wing has a second black mark around the node in the middle of the leading edge.
