An Echinacea purpurea (also called Eastern Purple Coneflower, Purple Coneflower) wildflower was blooming in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on June 18, 2025. There was a tiny native bee on the flower, possibly genus Halictus.

Inside the yellow centre of a small purple aster blossom, a bee has its face dipped down, drinking nectar. It has long antennae and a dark body with abdominal stripes, and is peeking one large inky black eye through the flower.

Tiny little sweat bee/Halictus on a Douglas aster bloom

Flowers are about 2-3cm from edge to edge so these guys are probably around 7mm or so

The long body & antennae I think it’s a male

So nice to catch such a tiny thing in a beam of golden hour light
