Well now, there's a lot going on with a male Anna's Hummingbird we met tonight in the cholla patch...golden hour light shines on his iridescent gorget as he floofs his breast and belly feathers and flares his tail feathers with his tiny feets clamped on a twig against clear blue sky. Epic. My fav hummer in quite a freaking while...

It was chilly this morning, and my borby Anna's male was willing to let me stick my lens in his face while he warmed up on the feeder. First, the innocent look...

Then the surprised look...oh, you're taking pictures???

Now he's getting angry, how dare you take my picture when I'm so round...

When you meet a round Anna's Hummingbird in your Emory Oak the morning after a snow storm...

...and he's more interested in borbing to stay warm than in flying away from your pesky lens...

Hummingbird feathers are made of a protein called keratin and feature a complex, iridescent structure composed of flat, hollow melanosomes stacked like pancakes, which refracts light to create brilliant colors. This structural color is a result of light bouncing off the layered surfaces, creating a shimmering effect that is unique to each angle of light. I mention all that because I stuck my camera in a male Anna's face at the feeder and I love all the details of his feathers this close up.

I nicknamed him Daniel-san because he's perched on the tip of some bamboo rods like Ralph Macchio on the beach, but he's way more borby than Ralph and you get a little halo of that Anna's Hummingbird iridescence around his face at this angle of backlighting...

...and then none with a teeny turn of his head. Still borbing hard though.

It's hot in Arizona. Shocker, I know. So she's trying to stay cool under the canopy, and she looks a little irritated that some of that hot sunlight, and my eye, found her, despite the camouflage. A colorfully borby male Anna's Hummingbird perched on a branch just starting to accumulate some snow on one end...

...looks both ways to make sure I get his good side. Cool how the iridescence just behind each eye freaked out my sensor.

Besides a cute female Grackle I met at a taco joint parking lot up in Vegas, I haven't taken a good picture in a week. By design. That's what taking a break should be. So we're back to more edits of my poofball Anna's male, starting with a profile and a tiny hint of iridescence...

...and with a slight turn of his head that iridescence turns into a halo of color around that adorable face. If you're wondering, this Anna's male is perched on one of the bamboo sticks that my wife is letting her Tangerine Beauty Crossvine grow up on.

Turning heads...even with my clothes on.

A borby ruby-throated hummingbird with just a glint of its emerald green head and back perched and taking lots and lots of sips from the red sugar bar.

A juvenile male Anna's Hummingbird perched at the end of a twig. Many of the feathers on his crown and gorget have not developed their iridescent color making his face splotchy with color. I love his eye and his poofy butt feathers too. Chef's kiss!

A male Anna's Hummingbird sits in profile but looking at you with just enough dappled light on him to fire some iridescence on parts of the crown and gorget while other parts are in deep shadow...

...as he moves his head the change in iridescence is marvelous...

...finally reaching a spot you can see his eye as the iridescence subsides...

...and he enfloofenates his crown feathers while sticking his tongue out to complete your moment of Zen with a hummingbird.
