On a pale grass seedhead, a slender, muscular-bodied fly with a small head and bulbous red-brown eyes holds clasped in its legs the body of a larger fly - perhaps a hoverfly? - a long, sharp proboscis poised over the other fly's lifeless body.

Another robber fly on a narrow twig, poised over a much smaller insect with ragged pale wings and small, beady black eyes.

Another robber fly, on a slightly furled nettle leaf with serrated edges - over a black and brown bug.

For #insectSaturday / #insektenSamstag - have some miscellaneous #robberflies, with prey, from earlier this year.

An orange butterfly on dark green leaves. The butterfly has black spots and three white spots with black outline on the center front top of the wings. The outside edges of the wings are ragged. The body of the butterfly is also orange with orange hairs. The front of the body has brown and white coloring with the orange.

A caterpillar with a black and orange patterned body, with tiny white dots making up stripes along the length pf its body. It is covered in black spikes and rests on a large green leaf. The leaf is a vibrant green and has visible veins. The background is blurred green foliage.

A split-open ripe passion fruit, displaying its translucent yellow pulp and numerous seeds, rests on a textured stone tile surface. If you've ever experienced the inside of a pomegranate, it is like that inside.

🦋 Just saw this ragged Gulf Fritillary, surviving to the end of the season. Not surprised to see it because I do two things:

A cluster of small, round, brown-black bugs on a large green flower bud on a shrub - with small white and orange dots, and one waving long, segmented black antennae around.

Two much larger bugs on another green flower bud - vaguely resembling ladybirds in their general, near-hemispherical shape - black with white and yellow spots in lines along their segmented abdomens.

Flattened, roughly circular green shieldbug nymph on a leaf - outlined by pink, with more white spots in lines along a dark, segmented abdomen.

Three different instars of Nezara viridula nymphs spotted in a west London garden, early this week - and it seems the adults look quite different again!

Close-up view of a dragonfly, from above and off to one side. The four, many-faceted transparent wings glitter in the early autumn sunshine - and are attached via knobbly structures to the thorax - which, like the long abdomen, is covered in yellow, blue and black patterns. The bulbous eyes reveal complex shapes from various optical effects from the multitude of closely-packed lenses.

Large cranefly on a green bamboo leaf - its narrow, greyish, muscular-looking body with a small head, long narrow wings and long, slender legs - giving it its common name of 'daddy long-legs'. (It's not the spider or a harvestman...)

Slender fly on a reddening autumn leaf in the sun - thorax an iridescent, metallic green, folded wings many-faceted and glittering.

Near-hemispherical ladybird - glossy red wing cases with black spots - on a dried, dying autumn leaf.

It seemed end-of-season for many bugs - then yesterday was warm and sunny. Cue ... bugs!

Dragonfly: Aeshna cyanea?
Cranefly: Tipula sp.?
Fly: Sargus bipunctatus?
Ladybird: Coccinella septempunctata

Bonus butterfly photo from yesterday - I didn't initially notice this later shot where the butterfly turned slightly, for the sun to reveal iridescent hairs underneath the wings...

Big scary yellow, brown and black hornet feeding from a pink buddleia - except it's a little too rotund and cuddly to be a hornet. It's a hornet mimic hoverfly!

Another angle of the hoverfly. Lovely creature.

I only got a handful of in-focus shots of the hoverfly from above - most were of its arse. Helpfully, such shots reveal the underside of its abdomen - the second ventral abdominal segment, or sternite, being black rather than yellow, suggesting that it is indeed Volucella zonaria rather than the similar-looking V. inanis.

I realise I've been posting a lot of wasps on here. For variety, have a gigantic hoverfly, Volucella zonaria! Which is, erm, a hornet mimic impersonating the best of all the wasps, the European hornet...

Sleek, elegant wasp seen side-on, with a glossy dark body with small yellow-white patches on its face, thighs and long antennae. Wings folded, on a bramble leaf.

A long, slender, glossy black wasp with orange, muscular legs and wings folded across its back - long, narrow antennae sampling the air. Sat on a spiky green nettle leaf.

It's ichneumon season here - there loads buzzing around. And occasionally, I identify one. Here's a female Apechthis compunctor...

Close up of two coneflower domes with a bee on one. There is almost a full dome in bottom half of the view. From a dark center arise little spikes in a regular pattern that turn bright orange at the tips. The bee is working over these spikes. The right side of the top of this view is half of a similar coneflower dome where long mostly orange spikes radiate outward from the center, giving a side view. Remaining view is blurry green with some reddish orange petals visible at bottom. Bright light is hitting the center behind the bee.

While visiting Dayton, TN and the Scopes Monkey Trial courthouse, I went over to the #pollinator garden planted on the site by a garden club.

Turned out to be a different world entirely.

An insect on a log. There is a wide head with bulging eyes on each end (better to find you and eat you with). Behind the head is a thorax that is a light blue color. Behind the thorax a long very slender abdomen with very long clear wings overlapped above it.

Is it appropriate for a voracious predator to be a powder blue dancing flyer? Not if you're in Hollywood, but definitely if you're in Eno River State Park, NC.

Butterfly on flower with bright red petals and bright yellow reproductive structures. The butterfly, in contrast, is dull brown with some even darker brown areas. The forewings do have some small pale orange and ivory spots. And there is a fringed edge to all the wings. The body is similarly brown but furry.

Under a flower with many white slender petals and a yellow core, are two insects, one in the grasp of the other. A small tube is seen arising from the head of one insect and touching the body of the other. Blurry background is mostly green, but there is a similar flower in the foreground.

Under a flower, An Assassin Bug has captured a Potter Wasp and is using its proboscis to inject venom into it.
