Have you ever heard of a brittle star? Recently, we published a fascinating article on the subject of the Brooding Snake Star (Amphipolis squamata)! The Brooding Snake star is a small species of Brittle Star, found across the British Isles. It is closely related to a sea star, & has 5 cephalopod-like arms that it uses to swim around. Brittle stars get their name from the behaviour of shedding their arms when they feel threatened. They are known to be found under rocks, in seagrass meadows, & in rocky tide pools. On the top of a seaweed-covered rock, a small, round hole, about large fist sized, looking like something punched out by a giant on a pogo stick, shelters intertidal critters waiting for the tide to come back in. There are two or three purple sea stars, holding tight to the sides, and a creamy anemone. On the bottom, there are pieces of shells and a small Grainy-Hand hermit in a broken shell. The seaweed on top is the very green sea lettuce, and a couple of lumpy brown algaes.

What's happening here? On a rock with seaweeds, some dark, reddish, encrusted on the rock, others in brick red to brown, in large, shiny blades hanging loose, one bright green patch of sea lettuce. Sprinkled everywhere are tiny barnacles. And in the centre, a crane fly with pale brown patterned wings. And 11 legs: count them. There must be a second fly beneath this one.
