Akademische Patronage und Abhängigkeiten am Beispiel des Internationalen Instituts für geistige Zusammenarbeit in Paris
Jonathan Voges
Abstract
In 1925 the French government established and funded the International Institute for Intellectual Cooperation as a gift to the League of Nations. Its aim was to do the operative work of the International Committee of Intellectual Cooperation, which had been founded two years earlier. The Institute offered rather well-paid jobs that could also serve young graduates as springboards for national academic careers. The recruitment process for these positions ought to have followed the rules, especially regarding transparency, that the League of Nations had developed for hiring its employees. In the event, national governments as well as prominent professors, sometimes pursuing their own agendas, tried to install candidates of their choice in Paris. The article deals with such cases of academic patronage in a working environment closely connected to the universities.
