With the sun setting, our jeep headed for park exit on our last safari on our last day in southern Africa. We were in Botswana, the northern neighbor of South Africa.

We came upon a line of jeeps all parked on the side of the road. That means someting major has been spotted. Our driver found a spot, and we looked across a clearing to the edge of the forest. I soon notice motion in a tree. A leopard! Then two others. They came out of the forest into the clearing. I saw that it was mother leopard and her two cubs. She's on the rim of the hole looking to the left. I kept shooting with both my cameras. Eventually they crossed the road and back into the forest through a gap in the jeep line. I was so excited, I forgot to remove the polarizing filter from my lens, which explains the very brown quality of the picture.

When we got back to our hotel room, I danced a jig for nearly an hour!

Leopards, known for their solitary social structure, maintain distinct territories that may slightly overlap with others. Adult males have larger ranges covering multiple females' territories, yet they typically avoid direct contact, interacting mainly during mating. After mating, males play no role in cub rearing, a duty solely shouldered by females who move the young between hidden dens for protection. Territorial marking is done through scent, scratch marks, and vocalizations like rasping calls. This solitary lifestyle minimizes food competition and enables leopards to adapt seamlessly across diverse habitats.
