It was interesting to be able to see these old solitary bee breeding chamber cells in a block of split wood. There were three 'tunnels' that had been used. Would have been nice to know which species was involved. #longmelford #suffolk

A beautiful red brick built Tudor mansion with cut stone window and door frames. Taken facing the main entrance of the Hall. In the foreground an ancient brick built bridge crosses the moat and leads to the area in front of the main door.
The space is framed by the two wings of the house which are topped by matching hexagonal brick towers topped by copper sheathed cupolas.
The house is pretty much as it was when built in the mid 16th century, although the origins of the house date back to the Norman Conquest and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

One for this weeks #PalacesandGardens on the theme #Towers. Taken on my mobile phone of the time.

MARBLED CLOVER. I caught 5 last night - a long way from their Breckland stronghold. That's now 7 from three locations on two farms over the last month, all by fields managed under Countryside Stewardship. I hope they've colonised. #longmelford #suffolk #mothsmatter

It's a shame this WHITE-LETTER HAIRSTREAK was past its best today as it was very confiding - and still great to see. #longmelford #suffolk

Arhopalus rusticus (Dusky Longhorn Beetle). Five of these large (25mm) and impressive longhorn beetles were attracted to my moth trap last night. The literature says that they were formerly a Scottish species that has spread south using conifer plantations. #longmelford #suffolk

More searching of ancient oak trees has produced three new sites for the Nationally Scarce COBWEB BEETLE (Ctesias serra). Two of the excellent larvae are shown in the attached photographs. Really nice to be able to find these locally. #longmelford #suffolk #ukbeetles

I went searching for the larvae of the Nationally Scarce COBWEB BEETLE (Ctesias serra) with Stuart Read today and was over-the-moon to see this larva that was under a small piece of bark on an ancient oak tree. Amazing! #longmelford #suffolk #ukbeetles

Three productive evening sessions of moth trapping in local woods ended with a combined total of 21 species. I'm tempted to say it already seems better than last spring. 🫣

Nemapogon clematella (Black-barred Fungus Moth) larval silken tubes on Hazel. It's the older (uncoppiced) Hazel trees with standing dead stems that support the Hypoxylon fungus - which in turn support the moths! At least, that's where I'm finding them. #longmelford #suffolk #mothsmatter

It was nice to get out to some local ancient woodland with the moth trap last night. Nothing rare, just the 'usual' late winter species, but good to see some moths about. #longmelford #suffolk #mothsmatter
