My attempts at Gothic illuminated lettering and guilding. A 'G' and some other letters

The workshop space in Worcester Cathedral undercroft

Sheets with letters on for tracing in Goudy style, and other tools for Calligraphy and guilding

So, not sure that I will be asked to join an Order of Medieval Scribes anytime soon, but a nice afternoon spent looking at books in @worcestercathedral.bsky.social library for #MedievalFest Gothic Calligraphy workshop having a go at my own illuminated letter ✒️📚⛪️

Thinking about the last #HistFest #MedievalFest session on bodies, health, and healing, as I serve up a Caesar salad so pungent with garlic I know I'll still be able to taste it in the morning, and feeling (slightly superstitiously) that perhaps it will help to ward off any of the bugs going around.

I was surprised, but perhaps I shouldn't have been, that they managed to turn to such depth and relevance at the end, on the power of poetry in times of war.

The view from my window, a study in grey and gold. The sun glows in a windy sky of every shade of silver and grey. A rough loch reflects the light. All else looks dark.

Through a window which reflects some shadows, the sky is 2/3rds blue with a streak of white across it - is it natural or an old chem trail. Grass with a scattering of grey rocks and a mass of New Zealand flax. Beyond, rough grass fields.

On a folded roughly woven rug, 2 black cats lie. In front, Charlie, the smaller, is a loaf. Behind, the big fluffy Bear lies on his side, back legs against his friend.

A stormy day but we’re only on the edge, really. The cats are snuggling & I’m attending #MedievalFest in my pyjamas. #uist
