Dear friends, for International #MotherLanguageDay, this week we're screening a Korean drama about the first Korean language dictionary under Japanese occupation.

Let’s hope for and work towards a world where everyone will be free to speak their mother language.
Love, peace, and solidarity ❤️🕊✊️

United against language supremacies promoted from EU state members. We're not united with fascists, we're against them instead.

We don't say 'voz', 'voix' nor 'voce', but 'veu'. This post doesn't fit in European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.

#MotherLanguageDay recognises linguistic diversity.

The first language on the #SaanichPeninsula was #SENĆOŦEN, by the #W̱SÁNEĆ people.

Immigrant languages came from Scotland, Hawaii, Sweden, China, England, India, Ireland, France, California, Japan, Germany, Wales, & Australia.

International #MotherLanguageDay honours everyone’s right to speak, share, & preserve their mother tongue. BC’s rich linguistic diversity – from Indigenous languages to the many languages spoken across our communities – strengthens our sense of belonging and builds a more inclusive province for all.

A digital drawing of a stylized (style inspired by art deco, partially streamline moderne) white eagle with red accents, a golden beak and eye, sticking its tongue out, which wraps around its beak to form a crown above its head. There's a speech bubble that says "A niechaj narodowie wżdy postronni znają, iż Polacy nie gęsi, iż swój język mają" ("Let the foreign nations always know, that the Poles are not geese, but have a tongue of their own"), a quote by Mikołaj Rej from 1562.

For this year's Mother Language Day I'd like to honor Mikołaj Rej's 1562 quote that, back in the 16th century, challenged the widespread use of Latin.

It fits well with English being used everywhere nowadays.

Le danger de disparition de la langue kurde ne se limite pas à la Turquie: la faiblesse des institutions & le contrôle politique marginalisent progressivement le kurde en Iran & en Syrie également.

My favourite words in Italian and German: strapazzare (It, it sounds fun and means "to exhaust someone" or in the kitchen "to whip") and Feierabend (after the working day in the evening you wish a colleague lit. a "Party-Evening" even if you don't party). #mothertounge #motherlanguageday #languages

The Last Man to Speak Ubykh
John Burnside

The linguist Ole Stig Andersen was keen to seek out the remaining traces of a West Caucasian language called Ubykh. Having heard that there was one remaining speaker he set out to find the man and arrived in his village on 8 October 1992. The man had died a few hours earlier.

At times, in those last few months,
he would think of a word
and he had to remember the tree, or the species of frog,

the sound denoted:
the tree itself, or the frog, or the state of mind
and not the equivalent word in another language,

the speech that had taken his sons
and the mountain light;
the graves he swept and raked; the wedding songs.

While years of silence gathered in the heat,
he stood in his yard and whispered the name of a bird
in his mother tongue,

while memories of snow and market days,
his father’s hands, the smell of tamarind,
inklings of milk and blood on a sunlit floor

receded in the names no longer used:
the blue of childhood folded like a sheet
and tucked away.

Nothing he said was remembered; nothing he did
was fact or legend
in the village square,

yet later they would memorise the word
he spoke that morning, just before he died:
the word for death, perhaps, or meadow grass,

or swimming to the surface of his mind,
that other word they used, when he was young,
for all they knew that nobody remembered.

International Mother Language Day | United Nations The purpose of the day is to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

🗣 ️Did you know that out of 8,324 languages:
➡️ Less than 10% are found in education systems and the public domain.
➡️ Less than 1.5% are used in the digital world.

#MotherLanguageDay reminds us how imperative it is to protect and transfer this key element of our cultural heritage.
