AshmoleanAdvent Day 13: Chestnut #Netsuke.
Until the 19th century #Japanese citizens wore a kimono, fastened by an obi (sash). Small personal items such as purses, pipes or medicine containers were hung from the sash by silk cords.

I know I'm biased but this is a great exhibition showcasing #Japanese objects from ukiyo-e, to arms and armoury, to #netsuke. On display until March at Cliffe Castle Museum #Keighley #Bradford @bradfordmuseums.bsky.social.

This 19th-century netsuke takes the form of a tengu mountain demon emerging from an egg. Tengu appear with both bird-like and human features. They're known as the protector of trees and dwell in the mountains. They're known to be trickster... you wouldn't want to be get on their bad side.

#las nie obfitował w dziuple, więc znalazłam dla mojej sowy miejsce w rozgałęzieniu drzewa. Sowa w lesie brzmi perfekcyjnie.

Trzy figurki z drewna przedstawiające stylizowane konie, dwa duże i jeden mały. Wykonane w stylu netsuke Three wooden figurines depicting stylised horses, two large and one small. Made in the netsuke style.
Carved netsuke, probably ivory. Japanese woman in kimono and obi sitting, cutting her toenails. Her hair is in the classic geisha style, swept back and out on the sides, topped by a large bun. There are several amber ornaments in her hair; a comb and two hair pick, and an amber ball on the side of the bun. Her features are delicately carved and charmingly, she is wearing a pair of round amber eyeglasses.
My favorite #netsuke. The glasses slay me.
In the 18th century, Japanese craftsmen made netsuke in the form of standing European figures. Many of them were shown holding an animal, like this Dutchman with a dog. The Dutchman's eyes and nose are exaggerated, and he wears a layered outfit with pantaloons and hose, along with a typical, large Dutch hat. The ivory has aged and turned yellowish-orange.
I’ve always loved Japanese #netsuke and this ivory caricature of a Dutchman and his dog was too good not to share. Netsuke is a toggle. Japanese men used netsuke to suspend various pouches and containers from their sashes by a silk cord.
