A young woman stands very still, eyes closed, against a dim greenish-blue sky. A snake glides at her feet. Headphones on her ears connect by a cable to a device in her left hand. In her right hand she holds a book close to her chest. The young woman is brown, the snake is browner, and though you can't know it from the artwork alone, they're an Apache and a cottonmouth, and, once you know that, the illustration is consistent with those facts. At first glance you might think a scattering of yellow bits are stars in the sky, but on closer examination you would see that they're shaped like raindrops, or teardrops. The art style is simple and spare, and the book cover is uncluttered. There's an inset circle saying "National Book Award Longlist," but otherwise the only text is the title and author, "A Snake Falls to Earth; Darcy Little Badger."
For fun in February, A-Cover-A-Day, books I love; that's all.
