The mythology of the Iris flower dates to Ancient Greece when the goddess Iris, who personified the rainbow (the Greek word for iris), acted as the link between heaven and earth The piece is a representation of this mythological goddess, painted in a way that reflects my cultural heritage. In Spanish, the word Arcoiris means rainbow.
The young girl in the piece is Panchimalco, celebrating the flowers and palm festival. Panchimalco are descendants of Pipil Indians fleeing the Spanish takeover of San Salvador during the 16th century, into areas originally inhabited by Mayan and Nahuatl peoples. Panchimalco is known for its indigenous population and its festivities.
