Incantation II
By Dawn McLachlan

Light the candle
Shield the flame
Push the Dark away again

Gold the light beneath the door
Bright the step upon the floor
See the way the light now lingers
Green that stretches out her fingers
Soon again Spring will return
Close the season to be turned

Light the candle
Shield the flame
Push the Dark away again

An incantation for #imbolc

Footnote - The first part of this incantation was for the Winter Solstice.

Eggshells

“Don’t speak of it
Ever
You’ll only upset people”
People
Person
In this way I limped into the future
With my mouth shut
Every step fearfully placed
On the egg’s shell
And the cracked glass
Of an imagined upset
And the possibility of blame
Finally finding a home
Until the tumble
And the avalanche
And the roaring wind
When the filthy veil
ripped away
Forever
The blame remains homeless
But these eggshells won’t carry
Witches anymore

Walk with Me
by Dawn Mclachlan

Walk with me again
When green things nudge at the dirt
And the snowdrops rise
Talk to me of other lives
And I will remember you

Walk with me through ancient ways
And tell me old tales
While the bright new leaves unfurl
Talk to me of happy times
And I will remember you

Happy Ever After
By Dawn Mclachlan

Once I was a jewel
Polished and treasured
Beyond all measure
Held to light
Aloft and bright
In ivory towers
Pedestalled
Until the cracks of the fall
Stitched in red
like spelling mistakes
Dust gathering turning
Purple to yellow
Unseen and unheard
But in the memory of time
Insistence weeps
Once I was a jewel

First Snow
By Dawn Mclachlan

and dreamed of torn angels
In the light of morning
the children came
to throw themselves into the white
falling into the breathless silence

Nocturne 83
By Dawn McLachlan

Fast on slick black roads
In a night that tasted
Like lip gloss and bravery
Don't let go
Lean into the electric night
Heartbeat like the static
Of the tuneless radio
Sodium light pulse
Tearing out sleeping streets
Into the endless deep blue Whipping stars in branches
Above the hollow ways
And the sweet cool wind
Like a baptism

June Somewhere
By Dawn Mclachlan

There were days back then
when we thought Spring endless in the vivid green
of the newness of the world
fresh with bright discovery tumbling into Summer's heat
Seasons ran
as seasons do
turning green, to gold, to brown and in the deep cold of time Winter snatched joy
with cruel speed
But in cornflower blue
with sweet meadow scent
of perfect memory
somewhere
it will always be June

In the chaos and horror of the world I’ve been thinking about memories.

A Spell of Winter
By Dawn Mclachlan

May the world still turn for you May you have the time to pause May your shoulders yet be strong
To bear winter's weight once more
May your roots reach ever deeper down
To find the hope within
Like ancient trees stand strong in winds while nurtured by the rain
May your hearth fend off the cold And your heart still feed the flame
May you gather strength from winter rest
Until light returns again

Secrets
By Dawn Mclachlan

After you'd gone
Every drawer coughed up
Dust wrapped
Web draped
The whispers of solitary walks
Scribbled notes from tiny pencils
Creosote scented jumpers
From crackled afternoons
At the shed radio
Newspapers under the cushions
Scored with lines and numbers
Each bundle of pound notes
Each yellowed betting slip
Another secret

Solstice Set
by Dawn Mclachlan

On the shortest day
We climb up the sleeping hill
Searching for life signs

Tracks in frozen grass
Slick with recent melting snow
The earth ridged and brown

A winter bruised sky
A shard of blue splits the clouds
Pierced by mournful skeins

At the final ridge
You reach out to take my hand
Urging me higher

Here we see the world
In a thousand shades of green
Stretched beneath our feet

In gold light we see
Despite the winter's great threat
Spring will come again

Between the lines, by Dawn McLachlan

"Dear Chris, happy Christmas Love from Dawn"
But in the empty gap that yawns
I really mean
"Are you still there?"
Between the lines I say I care and that I know we were never close
Our relationship just a courtesy little more than a legacy
of love for my godmother
who showed me the importance of poetry
and the joy of words
We both must remember how she laughed
and had a joy of life absurd with optimism
But at her funeral all those years ago we barely spoke and
now our contact just this annual token
and in our shared loss we were mute
That surely never faded from our hearts and yet
Between the lines
we say how much we loved her
Now, we just have this card once a year
And I'm thankful that we had her here
once upon a time
But I don't say that
So it's not what you hear
Instead I say again
"Dear Chris, happy Christmas. Love from Dawn."
Then the year the card came back
Via family solicitor, apologies
But sorrow lacked
and both of us ran out of time
No need to read between the lines

Whiteout
a haiku set by Dawn Mclachlan

In the silent night
Snow came down like memories
and cleansed the landscape

Smoothed to sugar-white
Harshness sweetened to the eye
Winter confection

From the far forest
Rooks rise in conversation
Punctuating sky

Now the dead trees
In the disguise of winter
Cannot be discerned

In the pink of dawn
An unexplored day stretches
As if newly born

The Hollow Ways
By Dawn McLachlan

We shall walk together in the hollow ways
On days when colour is blurred by morning rain
And worries will be lifted to drift away

Through sunken lanes in sun-dappled rays
We'll travel slowed down along ancient veins
We shall walk together in the hollow ways

As high above the great green canopy sways
We'll dawdle then until the afternoon wanes
And worries will be lifted to drift away

In susurrations come whispers of forgotten days
Hearing echoes of the distant past and the arcane
We shall walk together in the hollow ways

In an ancient place, away from sun's blaze
We find our own place in a wild domain
And worries will be lifted to drift away

As the real world feels like a distant haze
Take my hand, and walk with me here again
We shall walk together in the hollow ways
And worries will be lifted to drift away

Logs
A haibun by Dawn Mclachlan

From a high window I watch upturned clouds fill the valley and blur the silhouetted forest. The logs remain tumbled together in a giant bag in the yard. In a fit of hubris I dig out a pair of thick gloves and decide to move and stack them on my own. By the time I manage to haul everything in and fill the shed, the mist has arrived and stealthily smothers the town. It clings to me like sweat as I tug the day's splinters from my blistered hands. As streetlights signal the arrival of evening I shake beads of water from my hair like a dog and think of the supper I have yet to plan.

Shrouded in the mist
Fearful of Winter's sharp teeth
I stack logs alone

Lock the doors
A villanelle form poem by Dawn Mclachlan

Lock the doors, slide the bolts again
Across the water far distant islands sleep
Rest easy now for only peace remains

The storm will rage turning enemy to friend
Dark night shifts windows to mirrored keep
As we lock the doors and slide the bolts again

Our stories dark with Memory's sanguine stain
Thoughts of those we lost to endless sleep
Can we rest easy now where only peace remains?

At hearth and home we draw out such wraiths
With restless dreams of towering mountains steep
We lock the doors and slide the bolts again

Come rest with me, we'll talk through the pain
And softly dwell upon the loves we made to weep
But rest easy now, for only peace remains

With the air too thick with souls that creep
And long fireside shadows that dance and leap
We shall lock the doors and slide the bolts again
And rest easy here, for only peace remains

Ghosts
by Dawn Mclachlan

The dead return on stealthy feet
and in the quiet ways
Not in the shrieks of myth
Or the clanked chains of literature
Not in spectral bloodied cloth
And creaks of floor
They require neither season nor reason
Instead they appear in the watch unwound
The drawer jammed by a rusted penknife
They rise from a homeless key
And a half- remembered phone number
They tumble from yellowed photo albums
slipping from unused tools
in spider-webbed racks
They linger in restless moments
passing through childhood towns
They surprise us in the expression of a child
Or the saying of a friend
They return not in the fearful dread
But in the sorrowful silence
Or in a distant song that snatches breath
And brings an unexpected smile

Promises
by Dawn McLachlan

I came back for you
And searched the ways of a child
In the meanders of the river
Where the pools ran deep and cold
To where we dreamed of flying
Down hills pitted with barbs
Among the hollowed trees
I walked with crooked gait
The paths where I once flowed
In the vastness of memory
A place so shrunken now
And hoped to rescue you still
I dreamed I walked with you a while
And silvered all the fading scars
As if a bright constellation newly fallen
All yearning scattered like dust
In time I took a different turn
The long road curved away and I lost you
I promised to come back for you
But relieved, I found you gone

Pareidolia
By Dawn McLachlan

We threw our wishes into holes in the ground
And fast flowing rivers
Coins dropped into wet darkness
Warmed by fervent hope
And tumbled over faces in the stones
In clouds we saw the lost
The longed for
And angelic outreach
In the sacred spaces
Candles lit with prayers
And blown out with fingers crossed
Sticky with sugar wrapped sentiment
And rules to tell no one
We wrote our lists to things of myth
For a different time
A different place
Where wishes were horses
And distant planets stared back at us
Our desire to see Jesus in the toast
When all we had was burnt bread

Wear the Gloves by Dawn McLachlan

In those muddled days after When all was opened doors
And emptied drawers
I remember them
Butter-soft and finest leather
Stitching like the whisper of the needle
Wrapped still in silvered tissue
Faded tags of festive gifting
Unworn
Saved for a "best" too late to know So if you think me too showy
With misplaced colours and gaudy cloth
Fine jewellery worn for no good reason
It is because I have learned to Wear the damn gloves

She thinks of them as mannequins
Lined up
Nameless
Cold and still
Too many to count
Beyond the rope-stitched canvas

With their hideous labels

Because to say "shroud"
Is to drown in grief

Ophelia
By Dawn McLachlan

What were her last thoughts
On willow breaking
And the cold embrace of water
Was the rue still clutched
In the barest of fingers
In her decline did she grasp the branch Or just welcome the fall
And watch the black birds spin In pinked air above their roost
Holding back from the last landing of the day.
Caught in their great maelstrom of avian conversation
Did she watch the trees, their crowns shy
Tapping tips lightly in the breeze
Like stilted lovers
Branches dutifully stitched by nuthatch needle beak Jewelled with the flash of princely goldcrest crown
Threaded with wren song that ached the heart Forest gossamer webbed with evening mist
Silvering the boughs with fragile chains And the ghosts of remembrance hanging
As fresh as cut herbs

Protect and Survive
By Dawn McLachlan

I still remember what the underside of my school desk looked like
Counting the pocks of dried gum to get through the drill and the sound of the siren four minute warning
I wasn't sure I could spell everyone's name
If I needed to write tags for their toes
The leaflet didn't say
How long would it take to lose my hair
Or my teeth
That winter I was jealous of the kids with thick coats
That looked as they could hold back fallout
If we laid down in ditches
To wait for an all clear
That might never come

For Rest
By Dawn McLachlan

I will wait
Where the moss springs soft And the great roots wind
Beneath the sodden dark earth
Holding the memory of Time
I will take my seat in the dwindling light And draw in the brambled breath of the forest While blurred day spreads its liquid touch
To jewel leaf and branch In the fading moments
I will wait until the darkness falls And we can walk on together

Moon Dance
by Dawn McLachlan
One bright
silver apple hangs in the sky
and I am caught in a glow casting the shadows like magic, turning the darkness into a glittered light that lifts our cold souls We are bathed in this lunar spell together
your hand in mine in the crisp night air as moths we spiral, whirl and dance lost in the moment and the
moonlight

Phthalo Blue
by Dawn McLachlan

I think I must have known all along
Because in that long winter night
When the air prickled
with new possibilities
I felt a cool rush
chase the breath from my lungs
Beneath a chandeliered sky
Hushed by the whisper of the tides
I stepped forward
and reached out into the blue

New and improved #Fridaypoem for #poemsabout #chandeliers

This one with the title spelled correctly (sigh).
The background to this poem is a painting of my own of a night sea horizon using a single colour. Phthalo blue, oil on canvas.
