The particular silence of early morning in their apartment — the kind that belonged only to them, that had no protocol, no resonance frequency, no alignment threshold. Just warmth. Just the sound of breathing.
Ahbenii had stood at the window with her tea going cold and watched the city below begin to stir - the first transit humanoids moving like shadows along the lower walkways, the vertical gardens brightening incrementally as the light panels shifted - and she had felt, for a few unguarded minutes, entirely sufficient.
What she had with Zahra was sufficient. What they had built together - in small gestures, in the rhythm of shared space, in the particular way Zahra laughed at her own jokes before she finished telling them - was enough.
She had not known, then, how much she would need to remember that feeling.
Zahra had woken to find her still at the window.
