What Are Your Teslapunk Recs?
What are your favorite Teslapunk books, movies, video games, etc.?

What sticks in your mind when it comes to Teslapunk? The power of cool by adding Tesla to inventions of lightning guns or a Tesla Tokyo Tower? Fighting against people/companies to make life better?
Any other good points you want to add?

#PunkMarch #Teslapunk

This is admittedly a little harder to find since there's so much crossover, but...

Book
"Leviathan" by Scott Westerfeld has massive Tesla Cannons.

Movie
"The Prestige" (w/ Nikola Tesla as a character)

Video Game
Close to the Sun w/Tesla-designer super cruiser

Any others?

Teslapunk Aesthetics
Named after Nikola Tesla - based around eletricty! Think Tesla coils, plasma lamps, violet rays, etc.!
A little bit of steam (brass & leather) with glowing white, light blues, & neon purple electric crackles.
Similar in style to Steampunk with brass, top hats, goggles, and more - this alternative history adds plentiful and cheap electricity and/or eclectic magic powers.

Teslapunk Thoughts
Like Edison vs Tesla, does your punk go up against a specific figure?
Going up against corrupt empires? Companies? Is someone performing illegal experiments on people to gain more electric powers?
If the police have lightening guns/powers, what do regular people have?

#WritingCommunity -if you've ever wanted crackling lightning arcs to do anything you can imagine, Telsapunk is for you!

A micro/sub genre of Steampunk, instead of based on steam, this is based of Nikola Tesla & the power of cool with eletricty, coils & etc. inventions

Steampunk Aesthetics
Retrofuturistic technology & designs inspired by Vitorian era/19th - go for brass & leather!
Cogs, gears, dials, and analog clocks! Everything runs off steam (add boilers + steam pipes!)
The world looks as if steam power was the most dominant! Inventions aren’t sleek, but untidy, cogs showing, and very much looking DIY.

Steampunk Thoughts
A good conflict in this time period is Romanticism vs. Enlightenment; does this continue for you?
How is the environment doing as you continue burning wood and coal?
Are other punks (like clockpunk or Tesla-punk) mixed with your steampunk? How are people divided? Are people fighting against your steam inventions?

All the cogs, gears, & pipes (both for smoke & steam). There's more to steampunk than just sticking gears on things - there's adventure, heists, discoveries & so much more! Automaton fights, sky pirates, anti-teach Luddites! How is the world changed?

What Are Your Clockpunk Recs?
What are your favorite clockpunk books, movies, video games, etc.?

What sticks in your mind when it comes to clockpunk? Do you prefer wind up over water mills? Do you like the idea of clockpunk punching up in the future or hitting hard in fantasy settings?

Any other good points you want to add?

#PunkMarch Day 4 - #Clockpunk

Watch the Silver Swan (an 1872 automaton performs for about 30 seconds)-links on Wikipedia!

Also music by Clockwork Quartet, & the game Silksong has cogwork automatons.

"Goblin Secrets" by Willian Alexander has heavy clockwork.

Any others to add #WritingCommunity?

Clockpunk Aesthetics
Inspired by pre-industrial work, wood, brass, and bronze are popular, along with reflective surfaces like mirrors and lenses.
Machines and devices run on highly detailed gears (powered by springs? Winding keys? Water/Air mills)
Areas are very fantasy, but can also show off renaissance and Baroque time periods with incredible detail!
Clockpunk Thoughts
Who is making all these clockwork creatures? The government’s inventors or punk inventors? Why?
Is the world/country/universe/planet a clock, and the punks are trying to stop it? Re-start it? Slow down time to prevent a dystopia from forming?
Are inventors joining forces to fight? Is your punk responsible for gathering scarce/guarded materials?

#PunkMarch Day 4 - #Clockpunk!

One of my favorite "~punks," I love gears coming together to make cars, monsters, or even household servants.

Clock'bots using a watermill might stress about keeping enough water - or losing a winding key becomes more than a small personal problem.

Plenty of plots!

What Are Your Nanopunk Recs?
What are your favorite nanopunk books, movies, video games, etc.?

What sticks in your mind when it comes to nanopunk? What do you like to see done? Are you here for longevity, the health benefits, or being able to change your looks with ease?

#PunkMarch - What #Nanopunk recs do you have #writingcommunity ?

Michael Crchton's "Prey" sees nanotech dooming us, but "Tech Heaven" by Linda Nagata sees nanotech helping us.

There's also an episode of X-Files "Antibodies" - nanomachines developed to cure any fatal disease/trauma in their host!

Nanopunk Aesthetics
Many neutral colors, white/silver/gray/black with all the colors society wants.
Machines and devices that are molecular assemblers - self-replicating nanites/autonomous nanoscale robots
High tech areas that look clean (too clean), places to quickly program or get pre-programmed nanites to change anything about you. Science can help... but will it?
Nanopunk Thoughts
Are we still human with these nanites changing you? Are you still you? Actually, do you have a personal identity anymore?
Warning: the grey goo apocalypse is coming! Or maybe those nanites are rewriting rival codes...
Are you fighting at the molecular level? The companies or people behind “enemy” nanites?

#PunkMarch Day 3 - #Nanopunk!

Similar to Biopunk, this turns away from bio to go nanite! Small, self-replicating machines that fix your cells, change your hair color, or give you something you didn't have before.

Warning! The grey goo apocalypse can happen if those nanites never turn off!

#PunkMarch - #Biopunk Recs!

I've got 2 books!

1 -"The Changeling Plague" by Syne Mitchell - loved the ending!

2 -"The Windup Girl" by Paolo Bacigalupi - also good!

Films: Gattaca, of course (DNA discrimination), & many of Cronenberg's films! (win w/body horror!)

Biopunk Aesthetics Bio-luminescent blues, purples, pinks + sickly greens and yellows against dark colors
Organic areas with biological architecture - your environment might be alive!
High tech areas with labs (illegal + legal), mega corporations with trademarked DNA, along with modified crops, bacteria, animals (not just for humans)
Biopunk Thoughts
Are we still human with genetic manipulation? How much is too much? When does it become failed, or body horror?
Are your punks against the system? Fighting their own bodies? What’s their purpose? Who does it help?
What/Who are you fighting? Out-of-control parasites? Corrupted beast-men? Police designed with no empathy?

#PunkMarch Day 2 - #Biopunk!

Similar in color to Cyberpunk, the tone shifts toward sickly greens and yellows as well as neon.

Manipulating DNA, changing what's "human" or not depending on beliefs & severity of change.

Do you fight people created with no empathy? Beast-men controlled by megacorps?

Cyberpunk Aesthetics
Explosions of neon colors (purples, reds, greens) against dark skies/buildings
Signs in multiple languages showing a multi-ethnic culture in the area
Tall buildings crammed into small areas so there’s no sky, only more buildings, exposed wires stretched across everywhere

Cyberpunk Thoughts
What makes us human? How are “non-human” people treated? (Robots, clones, AIs, people with cybernetic implants?)
Are your punks against the system for themselves or for a community? What’s their purpose?
What are you fighting? Oppressive tech? Corrupted companies? An invasive police state?

#PunkMarch Cyberpunk's probably the most well known of punks.

Aesthetics: colorful neon on darkness

Themes: "low-life and high-tech"

With great tech & science achievements, we've become a decaying society. Dystopia.

Corrupted companies, invasive police... Do you fight for yourself or others?
