More #seaweed from Scottish #rockpools: a species of Cladophora. Filamentous, branching green #alga (i.e. plant) growing in profusion from high to low shore. Each branch is chain of single cells! One of most common types of seaweed in Britain and indeed around world. Port nam Murrach, near Arisaig.

Daisy anemone (Cereus pedunculatus), Camusdarach, Scotland: last of four sea #anemone species seen while exploring #rockpools this summer (others in chain of posts below). Buries itself in sandy crevices with only mouth and short tentacles showing: many hundreds of them waiting to trap unwary prey.

Most dazzling sea #anemone I observed in Scottish #rockpools this summer: dahlia anemone (Urticina felina). So colourful it's named after two flowers! This large anemone sports sticky warts on column so gravel and shell adhere and it can hide with tentacles retracted. Found all round British shores.

About a year ago we had huge blooms of these beautiful (but painful) mauve stinger #jellyfish around the #Cornwall coast. On one day strong onshore winds washed them into the lower #rockpools.

Strange beauty of sea #anemones is great joy of exploring #rockpools. Distant cousins of coral and jellyfish. I observed four species on summer holidays in Morar, Scotland, including common beadlet (Actinia equina) below. Also common is snakelocks (Anemonia viridis): like stinging bowl of spaghetti!

Short and unrewarding seawatch from @warrenbirding.bsky.social with only birds of some interest r pipit & med gull.
Tidepooling was productive w shore, edible, hairy porcelain, & dead spider crab, + a ragworm, 2 dwarf brittle star, large rockling sp & the rest of the usuals.

More #seaweed from holiday. Gutweed (Ulva intestinalis) is green #alga (plant) often dominating upper-shore #rockpools. Looks a mess out of water, but underwater it's otherworldly: jungle of thin, intestinal tubes, bubbling with oxygen by-product of photosynthesis. Near Morar and on Eigg, Scotland.

Beadlet (Actinia equina) is most common British intertidal #anemone. It can fully enclose in its column, so it's tolerant of exposure at low tide. It's usually vivid red, but occasionally other lovely colours. Abundant in Scottish #rockpools I explored on holiday: some nice examples below.

Close up photo of young fish in their egg sacs. These are a species of Goby and they were about the break free of the sacs and begin life as free swimming young. In the photo are tens of silver eyes each with a dark centre. The bodies are transparent with just the pale cream blob of internal organs visible.
Something fishy was going on under this rock, 100s of eyes were looking up at me, scanning around with that look of guilt.
