The blue calm of evening drapes beyond the high, grey clouds just beginning to reflect a thin, orange wash of sunset in the leftmost two-thirds of the photo. The right-hand third is filled with fire and the absolute rage of a thunderhead. Violent turbulence rises in the trailing wall of the cloud to sculpt a head part lion, part dog, and part dragon. It's the head of a fearsome beast with bared teeth, an open jaw, and a lashing tongue. The tongue is thin, dark, and stretching snake-like for thousands of feet through the center of the view. It dares only the brave to approach, but all would be best served by giving a wide berth. © David B. Stewart
