First scene from a short script, titled Salty, written by Nick Wasilieff
The scene begins:
INT. OLD HOME - LIVING ROOM - DAY
Teacups. Collector plates. TRINKETS. A shrine to kitsch...
...and Jesus, whose framed image hangs crooked on a wall.
A dozen crosses of varying sizes surround him.
The monotone voice of MAURICE sounds out.
MAURICE (O.S.)
It's not normal for me to receive court-appointed clientele.
The aged voice of BRENDA answers as we see many photos of her displayed on a mantle. Always alone. Aging with every picture.
BRENDA (O.S.)
I heard you, umm, specialized in a certain type of therapy.
MAURICE (50s, bald, gaunt) listens from an armchair. The top of his head shines in the sunlight.
MAURICE
Ahh... So you're experiencing paranormal trauma?
BRENDA (O.S.)
Yes.
MAURICE
Is the spirit here at this moment?
BRENDA (70s, frail, frumpy) shifts on a plastic-covered couch. Scratches at an ANKLE MONITOR. Through large, thick glasses, her eyes are exhausted.
Behind Brenda's couch loiters J.A. (male, 17, a ghost). Bloody. Gray-skinned. Straggly shoulder-length hair. He wears a uniform of a blue polo and tan chinos. Only Brenda can see and hear him.
J.A.
Am I present, BrenDUH?
Brenda nods. Trembles. On the brink of emotional collapse.
MAURICE
If the spirit were still of this world, would I see them in their current placement?
A continuation of the first scene from a short script, titled Salty, written by Nick Wasilieff
The scene continues:
BRENDA
Mm-hmm.
MAURICE
For your eyes only. Fascinating.
J.A.
How many times I gotta tell ya? Say sorry like you mean it, and I'll peace out.
Brenda is uncomfortable.
BRENDA
Sorry...
And unconvincing.
J.A.
Nah, I ain't buying it.
MAURICE
No reason to be sorry. Situations like this are never easy for the spirit or the haunted.
J.A.
What a dweeb.
MAURICE
Your personal connection to this spirit must be profound. Please enlighten me.
Brenda drifts into a daze.
The scene ends.
With the prompts dropping tonight for NYCMidnight’s #ScreenwritingChallenge, it feels liie a good time to reshare the 1st page (& a bit) from my short, Salty, which was born from the 1st rd of this contest a few years ago. It’s evolved since, but still one of my faves!
