Winter in sedge marshland in Northern Michigan. The snow islands are where patches of sedge (similar to grass) hold onto ice and create a platform for the snow. The snow itself was about 2 feet deep!

This is the second time I've burned this sedge meadow/wet meadow/prairie complex at the UWM-Waukesha Field Station. The ground was still largely frozen. The tussock sedge (Carex stricta) at this site has been regularly burned for decades, and this its Seussian post-burn appearance. #prairie #sedge
