The recent warm sunny weather brought out the insects, and in Rainham Riverside I found a Larch Ladybird, the Lygaeid bug Oxycarenus modestus, dozens of Mottled Shieldbugs, and over ten 2-Spot Ladybirds. #Ladybirds #Lygaeidae #Shieldbugs

For longer than I remember, we’ve been searching gorse and its relatives without any luck for Gorse Shieldbugs. How odd it was to spot our first one today on an old grass stem at Dersingham Bog with no obvious Gorse in sight.

A cluster of small, round, brown-black bugs on a large green flower bud on a shrub - with small white and orange dots, and one waving long, segmented black antennae around.
Two much larger bugs on another green flower bud - vaguely resembling ladybirds in their general, near-hemispherical shape - black with white and yellow spots in lines along their segmented abdomens.
Flattened, roughly circular green shieldbug nymph on a leaf - outlined by pink, with more white spots in lines along a dark, segmented abdomen.
Three different instars of Nezara viridula nymphs spotted in a west London garden, early this week - and it seems the adults look quite different again!

A number of ladybirds - beetles with near hemispherical, glossy orange-red wing cases with black spots - nestled in a curled up, dry leaf on a shrub.

Shield-shaped bug, a shiny mottled brown-green with orange-red legs, yellow-black stripy edges to the rear and a yellow spot at the middle of the body - on a slightly frayed, black and grey padded fabric strap of a backpack.
I try to photograph bugs undisturbed and in their natural habitats, such as ... on the strap of my scruffy old backpack. Apparently, I attract 'em!

Wider shot of that shieldbug nymph, revealing its previous home of a curved blade of grass, perhaps ten centimetres away from its new home.
There's a shieldbug (likely a nymph of the Common Green Shieldbug, Palomena prasina) been sat on the same blade of grass since Saturday at the latest. Except - not any more! New home - a nettle leaf! About 10cm from that curved blade of grass...

Vivid green shieldbug - like a tortoise on six, raised legs - on a matching green, curled blade of grass. It must be very proud of that grass - I keep seeing it there, day after day...
Large hoverfly - with a glossy black and translucent yellow-white abdomen, slightly ragged-edged wings and big burgundy compound eyes - feeding on one of many tiny purple buddleia flowers.
Small beetle - dark, glossy wing cases covered in tiny dot-like indentations in fine lines - and a narrow red-orange thorax, small, dark head and long segmented antennae. On a jagged-edged, slightly hairy, vivid green leaf glossy with water from recent rain.
A much smaller, daintier hoverfly - narrow striped abdomen, large eyes - hovering next to a vivid red-orange petal from a crocosmia flower.
Bugs! Including an actual bug - a shieldbug that's been on the same blade of grass for the last three days. Also, a Volucella pellucens hoverfly on a buddleia; a tiny little beetle and another, smaller hoverfly on a crocosmia.
