Could it be Wind Scorpion Wednesday already? After the rains in Arizona there are lots of creepy crawlers out.

Spotted a Solifuge (Eremobates[?]) munching on a roach, along with another roach that wanted a nibble. 😅

Can't believe how quick and voracious these guys are, took em less than 5 minutes between catching a meal and leaving behind an empty husk.

Close-up macro photograph of a solpugid, commonly known as a camel spider or sun spider, positioned among a cluster of variously colored rocks, twigs, and leaf litter. Its elongated body is covered in fine hairs that range from sandy beige to reddish-brown and grayish-black. The solpugid’s legs are prominently visible, with the front pair being notably long and robust, extending toward the camera and partially out of focus, emphasizing depth. Its powerful jaws, or chelicerae, are distinctly sharp, glossy, and visibly extended outward. A single dark eye is clearly visible on the head region, contrasting with the bright, sandy tones of the surrounding hairs. The photograph captures fine details, including delicate hairs and small particles of sand clinging to its body, creating a vivid and lifelike depiction of the animal in its natural habitat.

Detailed frontal macro photograph of a solpugid, highlighting its distinctive head and jaws. The arachnid’s impressive chelicerae are centrally positioned in the image, appearing sharp, dark, and glossy, clearly adapted for hunting and gripping prey. The hairy reddish-orange and sandy-brown head is detailed with two prominent, shiny black eyes positioned centrally on the cephalothorax. Its legs are hairy, robust, and textured with sand grains scattered across the surface. The surrounding rocky terrain, composed of textured and weathered stones with varying hues of brown, gray, and beige, complements the solpugid's natural coloration. The high-quality image vividly captures the intricate details of the creature’s anatomy, textures of the rocky substrate, and a realistic portrayal of its rugged desert environment.

One of my favorite arachnids is officially checked off the list, a stunning solpugid spotted at the Southwest Research Station in Arizona. Worth every bit of the journey to finally see one up close!

I’ve heard some crazy stories about these…..
I’ve heard some crazy stories about these….. YouTube video by Snakes & Safaris

How about that, just a pinch, no stronger than a crawdad's pincher claw. Always thought solpugids (camel spider/sun spider) could tear through skin with ease. I still wouldn't grab one, don't like pinches.

#Eremobates AKA #CamelSpider. Non-venemous #arachnid, but delivers an extremely powerful bite from its 4 fangs, and has one of the largest jaw-to-body ratios of any animal.
We found this one hunting around at night.

"Mutation March 2025, day 12 - arachnid." Watercolor drawing of a solifuge ("sun spider" or "camel spider") combnined with a pink lily. The head is a flower opening up into six stamens each ending with solifugae jaws. The legs are curling green leaves, and the abdomen is a closed lily bud.

All the invert art I've seen today reminds me of this little dude I saw in arizona a few months ago. I was really hoping to see scorpions, but seeing one of these for the first time was also very cool. I wonder if they fluoresce like scorpions do?
