extract from book 2 of 6 SlenderWolf In With the In Crowd Chapter 33 AMICVS CERTVS (Latin: amicus certus - a friend indeed) “She doesn’t call you HayWire does she?” asks OpenMike. “She calls me Peanut.” “And you call her LemonDrop?” “You know?” responds HayWire with a bit more surprise than is really warranted. “Everybody knows, we hear you two all the time.” says OpenMike, “if I may, can I ask you about the back story to the nickname HayWire?” Candidly HayWire replies, “did you read comic books when you were young?” and he willingly explains, trying to deliver a twenty second version rather than than the one hour lecture, “Squadron Leader HayWire was the flying ace in Spitfire, the boys’ comic. I used to love reading it. He’s a charismatic pilot who’s both brilliant and neurodivergent. He can outwit all the hostiles using his unique flying manoeuvre, the parabolic curve, when you think he’s going to do it vertically, he’ll do it horizontally. If you think it will be horizontal he’ll do a parabola as a shallow, sliding dive, and a rapid climb. He could always wrong foot everybody, even his wingman Flight Lieutenant Menace.” A watercolour painting of the school teacher Michael Rafone.
