It opened November 7, 1939, and was intended to house the Academy Awards, though it never did.

A sleek vintage 1940s 50s Streamline Moderne handmade sterling silver Art Deco to modernist Sailboat design brooch by Marvin Rudow of Rockport, MA. Rudow was an early east-coast studio jeweler who lived in NYC for the winter, but operated his business in Rockport, MA in the summer months. He was likely an educator at one of the colleges or universities in NYC, and focused on his art during their summer break. He was married and had a family, so I am guessing he wanted more stability for them thus he never gave up the 'day' job. In any case, this is a great Art Deco to modernist design (contains elements of both, in my opinion), entirely handmade, and in great shape after all these years! Measures 1.75" tall by 1.5" wide, and weighs 4.5 grams. Marked at back as shown, "Rudow Sterling". Rudow is also well known for his copper and copper enamel jewelry from the 1940s 50s era, so search my store for other examples by this artist. Excellent vintage condition.
