Kyanite Exsolution Reveals Ultra-Deep Subduction of Continents These figures show microscopic images from high-pressure experiments that show how kyanite separates out from silica minerals during decompression. Across experiments from 10 to 8 GPa (Gigapascal), kyanite forms as small rod-shaped and granular crystals within and along grain boundaries of stishovite and coesite grains, often growing in more than one crystallographic direction. These textures demonstrate that kyanite exsolution occurs during pressure release and can be preserved as the host mineral transforms. Abbreviations: St = stishovite; Coe = coesite; Ky = kyanite. Happy Holidays everyone! Since today is Christmas Day, I thought I would post a #Christmas #rock from #Norway. #Eclogite is an ultra-high pressure rock created in #subduction zones (~90 km depth). It is made of #garnet (red) and #omphacite (green).

Subduction Zone A subduction zone is a geological area where two tectonic plates collide, and one plate sinks or "subducts" beneath the other and is forced into the Earth's mantle.

A #Subduction zone is a geological area where two tectonic plates collide, and one plate sinks or "subducts" beneath the other and is forced into the Earth's mantle.

This process can trigger powerful #Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and #Tsunamis.

#geography

Rare blue yoderite replacing kyanite (-talc + quartz). Only found in two places on Earth (Tanzania and Zimbabwe), yoderite forms at high pressure in hot subduction zones from rocks rich in in Mg and Al, poor in alkalis and Ca, in the presence of water and […]

Subduction Zone Breaks Apart Beneath Pacific Northwest

Scientists on the vessel Marcus G. Langseth captured a subduction slab tearing off Vancouver Island, showing a five‑kilometre drop across a 75‑km stretch. The finding refines Cascadia quake risk models. getnews.me/subduction-zone-breaks-a... #cascadia #subduction

Slab fragmentation and cessation of subduction enabled by the NFZ.
Schematic 3D interpretation of the NFZ-Exp-JdF triple junction region in northern Cascadia where subduction termination is imminent. The paleo-NFZ (thin black lines) developed as a broad shear zone in nascent oceanic lithosphere and reactivated inherited abyssal hill faults formed at the ridge. The weakened lithosphere buckled as a trench-parallel slab tear formed at the northern edge of the Exp slab and migrated across the paleo-NFZ wake. Recent strain localization along the modern NFZ at ~1 Ma dissected the migrating slab tear and effectively isolated the Exp microplate, leading to enhanced tearing, decoupling, and a local reduction in the slab pull force. The NFZ thus serves as a trench-normal segmentation boundary enabling piecewise slab fragmentation and subduction termination.

This is a #serpentinite #shearzone.
It is part of a #subduction complex where oceanic serpentinites were subducted, sheared, carbonated, exhumed, and coupled with sediments that we recently described on the Island of Elba, Italy. A 3ad
