Rædwald's Return: A poem in alliterative verse by Karen M.P. Carlson “Perhaps the best known ... story about Sutton Hoo is Edith Pretty’s claim she saw an armed warrior standing on top of Mound 1 long before the excavation took place” . Maybe he wanted to be found!

In 2025 my most popular design was one based on the sumptuous motifs and colours of #SuttonHoo and it's still one of my favourites too.

For #findsfriday - a small box with iron ship’s rivets. These were given by Edith Pretty to Vincent Redstone to show success in the discovery of the Sutton Hoo ship. I have drew a similar rivets - a Viking one from Repton featuring in ‘River Kings’ by Cat Jarman. #viking #saxon #suttonhoo

We’ve got a very unique piece to show you today! As mentioned a few posts back, we’ve noticed how well the Sutton Hoo helmets fit over the Woden Head pendants, so I riveted the two together and gave this new piece a nice gold plate finish.✨

Hidden in Plain Sight: The Treasures Experts Called "Fake" How many world-changing treasures are you walking past every single day? We like to think history is set in stone, but the truth is, most of it is hiding in plain sight—waiting for someone brave enough to look closer. In this episode, we explore the incredible phenomenon of historical rediscovery, where the world's most valuable artifacts were dismissed as fakes, trash, or background noise by the so-called "experts." We dive into the humiliating arrogance of the academic elite who labeled the masterpieces of the Altamira Cave Paintings as modern forgeries because they couldn't believe ancient humans were that talented. We piece together the fragmented puzzle of the Sutton Hoo Helmet, showing how a pile of rusty "debris" turned out to be one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. This isn't just about old rocks; it's about cognitive bias. Why do we miss what is right in front of us? In this episode, we uncover: - The Altamira Mistake: How bias nearly erased the "Sistine Chapel" of the Paleolithic era. - The Sutton Hoo Resurrection: Piecing together a king's legacy from fragments. - The Invisible Evidence: How ancient footprints and digital data are rewriting the timeline. - The Power of Perspective: Why changing how you look reveals the truth. History isn't over. It’s just waiting for you to find it. 🔊 Press play to change the way you see the world around you. If you love unearthing hidden truths and challenging the status quo, hit that Subscribe button and leave us a review! Share this episode with a friend who has a keen eye for detail—they might be the next great discoverer.

The Benty Grange Helmet, original & reconstruction. It was found in 1848 in a late C7 barrow in Derbyshire - the first Anglo-Saxon / early English example found in the country, 91 years before the #SuttonHoo discoveries. On display in Weston Park Museum, #Sheffield. #Museums Pics my own, from 2021.

Not quite a skeleton, but an Anglo Saxon burial at #SuttonHoo. The bones have not survived, but the flesh had stained the sandy soil. During excavation, the soil was then laminated so that the figures of the dead were preserved & casts taken

Went back to @nationaltrust.org.uk’s Sutton Hoo today. My most exciting moment was finding these house martin feathers among the faeces below their nests under the eaves of the main house. They’ll make an excellent addition to my collection. 😁 #SuttonHoo

#SuttonHoo can be checked off the list of places I want to visit. 😃

Okay, none of the finds of the royal burial ground are actually still on the grounds - they're in the British Museum - but the replicas are nice too.

Obviously, the burial mounds are nice to see.
