For #findsfriday - a small box with iron ship’s rivets. These were given by Edith Pretty to Vincent Redstone to show success in the discovery of the Sutton Hoo ship. I have drew a similar rivets - a Viking one from Repton featuring in ‘River Kings’ by Cat Jarman. #viking #saxon #suttonhoo

The rusted remains of a very old helmet, on display in a museum. The head band, nose guard and main bands forming a cross over the skull survive, with part of a boar crest. A replica of the original helmet described in the alt-text to the other picture. This one is complete with extra bands, studded decoration on the bands, a cross on the nose guard and hair bristles on the boar crest.

Not quite a skeleton, but an Anglo Saxon burial at #SuttonHoo. The bones have not survived, but the flesh had stained the sandy soil. During excavation, the soil was then laminated so that the figures of the dead were preserved & casts taken

The Age of Twilight - an incidental soundscape by sanderson & sanderson, which I helped out with. The piece is inspired by the landscape of Sutton Hoo and Wuffinga-land, and features field recordings of a red deer rut on Westleton Heath.

House martin feathers
Went back to @nationaltrust.org.uk’s Sutton Hoo today. My most exciting moment was finding these house martin feathers among the faeces below their nests under the eaves of the main house. They’ll make an excellent addition to my collection. 😁 #SuttonHoo

A closed-cap, immature fruiting body approximately 15cm or 6” tall. Ball-like with dark flakes on the upper surface. Scales growths on the stipe or stem
The open parasol-shaped top is high on the stipe or stem above a loose ring.
In this specimen the opened cap is clearly patterned with darker flakes and is approximately 6” or 15cm in diameter.
A larger, mature specimen within the restricted archaeological area so photographed at a distance. Probably 10” or 25cm diameter.
My thanks to @debivort.bsky.social for his helping with the ID of this one. Very probably Macrolepiota procera. Growing in the sandy soil at #SuttonHoo in Suffolk. It is one of the #NationalTrust properties. And the site of royal Anglo-Saxon burials.
