Pretty sure we watched #TheLearningTree on one of these in 6th grade (Crescent Elementary, Pittsburgh, PA). My first exposure to Gordon Parks….. Richard Ward was so good. Kind of gave me the creeps for a long time after that.

There's a rich history here and in other Great Plains states, but there aren't as many film representations of it as there are stories about Black folks' presence in other regions. I recommend Nell Irvin Painter's excellent "Exodusters" book to learn more.

THE LEARNING TREE is an unconventional film in many ways, including its setting in Kansas, which mirrors Parks' own childhood. Newt and his family are the descendants of Exodusters, Black Americans who moved to the state to escape racial violence.
