Snettisham torc H7: Up close by Tess Machling [A download/print PDF version can be found at the end of the paper] Having previously written about the H7 torc from Snettisham a few years ago, I recently had the chance to see it…

A rather odd sibling for the Newark torc and the Netherurd terminal: Torc H7 from Snettisham.

I wanted to share this video of the fabulous #Leicestershire torc, a masterpiece of #BronzeAge gold work.

But how was a torc like this made & what might it have looked like? 🧵

If you liked mine and Trix's work on the Viking thieved Iron Age torc hoard from the Yorkshire area, you'll love this book...

...and I'd love you to give it a vote - fabulous piece of work by Julian, Dawn Trix and co-authors! 💪

Been doing some work and going back to read the Snettisham volumes again...

Oh my! 😭

I missed this in the first read of the volumes.

The Sedgeford torc.

Exhibit A - six supposed chaplets (casting support rods) within the Sedgeford terminal.

More about Ellastone fastener here.

This really is a critically important artefact - there's only 19 others from Britain & rest come from Ireland - are we looking at trade? Travelling ideas? Travelling goldworkers?

But we really REALLY shouldn't be held ransom by finders & landowners for such pieces...

The Big Book of Torcs by Tess Machling

For any who don't know, for most of the time I research prehistoric gold, especially Iron Age gold - looking at it from a craft perspective.

My website (of free to read info, from the basics to the complex) can be found here:

Beware!! A fake Credit Suisse "Gold" bar recently came into Presman Bullion.

This bar was a copper-plated one-ounce bar. On close inspection, you can see small bubbles on the surface, which are a strong indicator of plating. There is also noticeable wear around the edges, revealing a different coloured metal beneath. Additionally, the serial number has been laser-engraved, whereas genuine Credit Suisse bars are machine-engraved as standard.

Always compare any bar you receive with a known genuine example if possible. If not, ensure the weight is correct and compare it carefully against verified reference images of the same bar. Always Always Always take the bar out of its blister pack and inspect it before purchasing. If anything appears unusual, it's best to proceed with caution a genuine bar would be worth over £3,000, while this counterfeit is essentially worthless.

Interesting, when you think of all the plated ingots, coins etc in the past.

This one clearly fooled someone, but was only uncovered by those working with gold everyday...

More torc halves - Snettisham Great torc, Newark, Netherurd & Sedgeford.

Done for comparison - similarities & differences when scaled to same size.

I do lots of drawing, overlays, re-scaling etc. Helps me to visualise & think!

(Great for a teatowel print too! 🤣)

Created this a couple of years ago to show that - despite being differently decorated and different sized - several torc terminals (Newark left, Netherurd right) were created using the same proportions and layouts.

Rather pretty. ❤️

Honestly. We all need to read this. The amount of money apparently being spent, which could instead be being invested in our museum services is horrific.

Next figures from DCMS/PAS are due in the next month or two. How bad will they be?

Although of similar diameter, in all other respects (neck ring width & terminal size), Ipswich torc 2 is much smaller than the Snettisham Great Torc & yet was it produced from a similar amount of gold alloy!

Fun fact for Sunday.

The gold used to make one Snettisham Great torc (that cube in the centre, c.4cm x 4cm x 4cm, which weighs 1084g) would make ten of the tubular torcs found at Snettisham (which weigh c.110g)

𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 ‘𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱’!
The Knaresborough gold ring and a possible Viking-redeposited Iron Age hoard from eastern England

The Knaresborough ring is a unique find. Found in 1994 in Knaresborough, Yorkshire, the ring is made from sheet gold and displays many characteristics typical of Iron Age goldwork. However, the form of the ring is not typical of the period and corresponds most closely to Scandinavian-influenced ‘rings’ of the later 9th and early 10th centuries.

Dr Tess Machling is an archaeological researcher with a background in field archaeology and artefact studies. Since 2015 she has been researching Iron Age gold torcs and has published widely on the topic.
